1. Run a speed test at http:/miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/, after the test completes, see the info in the More details box

2. Run a tweak test at Tools in www.broadbandreports.com and make the suggested registry changes either manually or with the freeware DrTCP.

3. Repeat Step 1 to see if this made any diference

10% deviation is perfectly normal/acceptible.
Especially under Windows. I dunno about now but in the past it wasn't uncommon for Windows' network code to take 10%+ overhead from your bandwidth versus OS 8/9 or various brands of Linux.

It might not hurt to get a router of some kind if you don't have one. I'm guessing (hoping) you're running a firewall on your computer if you're directly connected to the modem, which will definitely slow you down some; using a router with a built-in firewall would make that unnecessary, unless you've PO'd the wrong people online.

windows IP stack has never been a very good performer. That's the main reason. Overhead is the same, but how it deals with timing and tcp window size doesn't follow RFC conventions.

like always, they do it "the microsoft way" and not "the right way"

Define pretty sure. What did you do to get rid of the virus?

The speeds your getting for the internet connection look fine, as others have said.
