DSL is it worth it? 768/128 for about $15.00 a month.

If you are on a very limited income, then you might want to think real hard about doing it. There are other things that are more important than fast internet. Make sure you're able to pay everything else off and have a little savings before you plunk down the cash for DSL (even if it is at a great price).

I have been using dial up for the past 15 years. I checked Verizon's website and I see that they are offering 768 down and 128 up for about $15.00 a month. I have never had dsl or cable Internet, so I was wondering if it was worth the $15.00 a month. I am on a very limited income, plus my dialup isp is good for another 7 or 8 months (prepaid). Dsl hasn't been available here except for the past 6 or 7 months and before now they wanted about $30.00 a month. Any advice? One of the things I think would be cool is being able to dl linux iso's and updating linux. The $15.00 a month thing is for a year deal, so I have to pay and use it for a year.

Thanks

Wow. Join the pirates.

Definitely better than dialup. I want to downgrade and switch from $50/month to Verizon but its not a good deal for me since I dont have a landline at home. I would have to get the cheapest local phone service which is $20 + $14.95 for dsl + taxes which in the end is not much less than the $50 Im paying already. But with my current service from Time Warner Cable I get 4mbit speed.

Besides the speed not having to deal with connect, reconnects, dropouts etc. is already worth the price imo.

The company I go through doesn't require phone service for DSL

Git 'r-done. That sounds like a more than reasonable monthly fee. Be warned your actual speeds may be only half of the advertised due to distance and line quality issues.

$15/mo. is good for that... but beware those stated speeds. I was sold the 3.0mbps download package but due to my physical distance from the CO (central office), I am really only getting 1.5Mbps, WITH problems (drops). I opened a trouble ticket about the drops and the Verizon tech told me my distance is something like 17000 feet away from the CO. 3.0Mbps is for within 8k feet, 1.5Mbps is within 12k feet... anyone further than 18000 feet shouldn't have been sold ANY service at all. He told me to drop the max speed to 864kbps and the drops will go away. I'm paying $30 for this too. :|

Anyway, point is, find out how far away from the CO you are first.. they should be able to tell you over the phone. There should also be a 15-day (I think) money back guarantee.

Uh, $15 is dirt cheap, even for dialup. Get out of the freaking stone age and see what the REAL internet is like

One thing to check is to make sure that you're getting that for a regular fee instead of a discounted monthly fee for a few months before the price spikes higher. Also, if this fee isn't going to jump up after a promotionary period, does it require you to be on a contract, holding you to their service for a certain period of time?

Yes it is a year contract. I think I am not going to do it right now. Maybe when I get a better job I can do it, but not right now.

Thanks to all who posted.

lol i paid $40 or more for AT&T dsl for 768down/128up. to upgrade to 1.5down/128up would have costed me $50. this was only a year ago

it was a total improvement over dial up

768/128 is plenty for gaming. in fact, its totally amazing and any game will run smooth on it.

hehe, now i have 5mb down/384up

thanks Time Warner 😀

Are you kidding??? GET IT! Once you get any kind of broadband, you'll wonder how you survived on dialup so long.

I think this deal is that I have to use the existing phone covrage I have. Plus the dsl for $15.00 they throw in a modem for free, except for $19.00 for shipping and handeling. I just tried to talk to someone in sales, but the line was busy. I want to find out how much exactly it is before I sign up.

Are you sure? I don't see why they would make you stick with the existing phone service. You should ask them, who is your current phone service through?

WTF do you live? Most Phone companies make you pay for a phone line if you want to get dsl. Most do not offer naked dsl as of yet. And no verizon doesnt charge you $100 to start your service. They charge $20 shipping and they send you a wireless router, modem, filters, usb cord, and ethernet cord. It is a good deal, but you have to decide if you really want it.
