DSL is it worth it? 768/128 for about $15.00 a month.

I have been using dial up for the past 15 years. I checked Verizon's website and I see that they are offering 768 down and 128 up for about $15.00 a month. I have never had dsl or cable Internet, so I was wondering if it was worth the $15.00 a month. I am on a very limited income, plus my dialup isp is good for another 7 or 8 months (prepaid). Dsl hasn't been available here except for the past 6 or 7 months and before now they wanted about $30.00 a month. Any advice? One of the things I think would be cool is being able to dl linux iso's and updating linux. The $15.00 a month thing is for a year deal, so I have to pay and use it for a year.

Thanks

Perry

$15 is an exceptional deal, assuming you are already paying for phone service (which you are).

Yeah I am paying for phone service with limited long distance. Something like community plus or something. Sourrounding counties/prefixes are included as a local call.

The benefit of DSL is downloading files and streaming video/audio. Only you can determine if you'll do enough of that to justify the additional cost. Remember there will be taxes and fees added to that $15/month so you'll want to find out first exactly how much your actual bill will be.

For me, the change from dialup to DSL 768/128 was worth it since it's about ten times faster than dialup, but I doubt I would pay more for additional speed.

Yeah they offer a 3.0 mb deal, but they want about $30.00 a month for that. I can't afford an additional $30.00 a month for internet, but $15.00 is probably doable.

From someone that went from dialup, to cable, to DSL, to cable, to DSL (and am now on dialup for unrelated reasons), *yes* it is definitely worth it... just make sure that you aren't putting yourself in a financial pinch by doing it.

Oh I wouldn't discount the speed increase for web browsing as well. You might think web pages load quickly enough on a modem, but when you're trying to do several things at once it's killer.

And yeah, I'd pay $15 a month for DSL in a second. How much are you paying for dial-up anyway? Unless you're getting it for free, DSL can't be that much more at $15.

How much do you pay for your phone line, if I were you I would get the DSL (keep in mind around here you have to pay 100$ for the equipment, and then it's 15$ a month for the rest of the year) and then turn the phone off and use a VoIP service.

I pay $7.00 a month for dial up and the isp I have (mailaka.net) has been really good. I was surprised at the service it has given me over the past year and a half.

How much does your phone service cost? Is that included in your 7$ bill for your dial-up?

I think this deal is that I have to use the existing phone covrage I have. Plus the dsl for $15.00 they throw in a modem for free, except for $19.00 for shipping and handeling. I just tried to talk to someone in sales, but the line was busy. I want to find out how much exactly it is before I sign up.

Are you sure? I don't see why they would make you stick with the existing phone service. You should ask them, who is your current phone service through?

I think the existing phone coverage after taxes fees and everything is about $34.00 a month. So if I get this it will be about $50.00 a month for telephone coverage and dsl together.

Is it a cell phone? I have heard about this verizon service, I didn't realize they had gotten to those speeds yet.In your area you are limited to there service only? If you weren't then the best way to go would be VoIP service on a DSL line through someone else. I'm going to start going through Southwestern Bell and they don't require me to have a phone line for the internet service. But you do what you gotta do right.
