DSL is a ripoff here

Right now I'm on 4mbit / 1mbit DSL for $29.95. My ISP upgraded me last month from 1mbit / 384 kbit for free.

well, that is the best bang for the buck here, so iam curious, what can you get for 30-40 bucks in america??

cover + a lapdance maybe?

I get 7/1 cable for $40. At one point I was getting over 10 Mb - sustained, not burst. But I pay for 7 Mb, and I get that at a minimum consistently.

6mb dsl is $37 a month. If I went with the cable company here their advertised high speed is 1.5 mb and it is $57 a month, Now thats blazing fast and cheap too 😛

I get 1.5mbit down/384kbit up for $20/month. It's the fastest DSL in my area. I can get faster cable, but it's more than double the cost, and the cable service in my town sucks.

3mb down, not sure what it is up, probably less than 1 mb, for $65 here in rural central PA

i guess you could be glad that they offer it at all?

Pretty much. My parents live in rural NJ, and they'd gladly pay $65 for 3/1. They're too far from the CO for DSL, and their cable company keeps saying they're going to offer cable modem in their area, but they never do. They switched to dish for TV.

or you could be my uncle. he calls the companies every so often to ask about it and they tell him when they get enough requests for his area they will put in there. just one small problem - probably 90% or more of the people in the area are Amish.

My brother's in the same situation: no cable and no dsl available. His only option (besides dial-up) is satellite, which would cost $500 up front and $60/month. On top of that, the connection speed isn't that great (maybe 256kb down).

Agreed with others, be glad you get anything at all above dialup. It's very easy to complain about what you have, but just keep in mind that it could be a lot worse.

I personally think I'd be fine with that much for downstream if I didn't have to share it with others, however half a mbps down and up is preferred.

ATT DSL (formerly BellSouth) pricing:

$25 =256/128
$33 = 1.5/256 which I am using now
$38 = 3/384
$43 = 6/512

Plus I have to pay a monthly fes around $20 for a basic phone line, no naked DSL.
