okay so check this out...we called southwestern bell in july to sign up for dsl and come september when it was supposed to start they said it got messed up and would take another month. okay thats cool...well another month rolls around and they gave us the same story. So we went to time warner and got a cable modem and haven't heard a peep from SWB. So now we want to try this new sprint ion stuff, so we call and they say 45 days. Thats cool since we have the cable modem running. So we are supposed to get it tomorrow and sprint calls us this morning and tells us MAY 10. what the hell? is DSL a myth?:|

UPDATE: APR/26/2001 Sprint called today and said they would be here a few days earlier than may 10th...maybe things are looking up

From my experience, cable is better than dsl. It really depends on where you are in terms of the CO.

yeah, you have a bad experience with an ISP, and DSL as a technology is now a "bunch of BS"

Yeah, DSL as a whole isn't too spiffy these days. My line went south in January, I have been waiting since the beginning of March for a transfer that was supposed to "take 2 weeks." FYI- DSLi.com is not a good provider.

Actually, he's right and it is. His experience is quite typical, and I won't be suprised if you lose your DSL within a year or two.

DSL is a bunch of BS, becuase it is dependant on outdated telco wiring. One house's success is as possible as the next one's failure.

While we're on the subject, I'm getting DSL installed Thursday...errr...tomorrow. It's from BellSouth in Georgia, but it's supposedly (sp?) different. It's IFITL (Integrated Fiber In The Loop). From what I understand they have to install some kind of special network interface on the outside of my house and then run CAT-5 through the wall to the PC. Anyone heard of this or know anything else about it?

stay cable you, dSL is too slow for the money. I am happy with my 250K/sec download and 45K/sec upload, ALOT faster downloads than DLS's measly 40K/sec donwload

DSL is suck ;)

I ordered it during summer and they never brought it... turned out they had cancelled my order and not told me on about the second day at Earthlink....

I called up roadrunner and they came out two days later and installed- and it is faster than most it think - averaging 2mbs down and 384 up

oh i forgot to tell yall i live on west campus in austin. which is very densely populated so the cable modem gets really slow a lot. Yeah we are hoping that ion gives us the full 8MBs downstream.

The idea of dealing even more with the phone company completely turned me off from DSL. Granted, the cable company isn't my best friend either but given the fact that cable modems are usually set up in an hour with no problems in the whole city (as opposed to the house-by-house problems of DSL), you don't really need to ever talk to the cable company again. . . .

Um...I have DSL and I get 180K/sec, yes, KiloBYTES. It may not be quite as fast, but at least it's consistent in my area. I wouldn't give Cox Cable (local cable co) a dime of my money.

All the internet is shared. And all connections are impacted by available bandwidth. DSL is no exception. Cable rocks. No phone line problems, always on.I have Charter @ 512up/128down. I'm quite happy with them. They will bump that to 1meg down/512 up at the end of the year(probably Xmas offering).

I can handle that.:D

It really depends on where you live and what the lines are like where you live, what service provider is available... there are to hard and set rules for which is better.

Where I am DSL is more expensive and slower then Cable. If I drive an half an hour from here to another town I know cable is oversold, slow and unreliable there while DSL service is quick and cheap.

SWB i think got one of the worse management for their SWB DSL service (of course, it's out-sourced)

after complaining of recieving a USB box, they shipped out a Ethernet box immediately. I was happy wit that. So i was gonna package the other one up and send it back. Guess wat, they don't even have on file. Also the CD-ROM installation disc, which I was grately to recieve 1 WEEK BEFORE i got the USB box, they sent another one out 2 months later.

You can check out more horror/good stories at www.dslreports.com

Well, it seems that americans have ALOT of trouble with DSL.. DSL however, is amazing here in Canada. I guess canadians just lucked out on DSL. Please dont ruin it for everyone.

I have 1.5Mbit(down)96Kbit(up) and its awesome.. Its been 15 months now that I have had this DSL and I can only account for about 7-8 hours of total downtime..

This is still my favorite ISP story.. I was talking to my local @home cable customer service rep to disconnect my service.. I said I was swtiching to the local ADSL provider, and he says, "Well sir, you know that that service has an upload cap at about 12k/sec." And I said, thats awesome, its twice what I can get now you your sh!t. And hung up. Much fun. (They were complete idiots and just overloaded my node.. and didnt care to fix it)

No, that's the companies. Just like most cable privders I bet.. cable happened to be available at my old apartment first, so I've had it. Good DSL (astnc business, with it's own phone line connected straight to the provider, no phone company charges!) would cost me $55/month as part of a package.. DSL choice is still really thin where I live and anything with a static IP is $50+ per month anyway, after phone company charges (for most places).

DSL is $40/month for me.. $30 if I buy a modem, but I'm on #5 in two years so I'll pass on that wise purchase.

Edit: If you pay for it, DSL can kick ass. Some places can even get you more than 3Mbits downstream... depending on this and that and this and that of course.

I love my DSL and it is from Southwestern Bell. I usually get about 1200 kbs down and 110 kbs up. They even installed it 4 days earlier than they said they would.

I have Pacbell DSL. I'd love to take a potato gun to their techs, put them out of their misery. Has to be the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Good thing is that once it's installed and working, it's actually pretty fast. I'm also getting 1.2Mbps download and 120kbps upload. Not as fast as my T3 at work but much better than 56K modems.
