?? Where I'm from, DSL basic costs from 40-60 a month. That isn't really up the ass.

Whoa! Who are you blowing at your provider's office? I thought $40-$50/month for 1500/250 was more the norm....

Bear in mind that's in canadian kilobits, so it's only about 2000kbps american.

Nope the Kilobits are universal, but the 20$ is in US dollars. I pay 30$ CDN... :)

I could also get 1000kbps/128kbps DSL for 30$ CDN, but they don't let you buy your own modem, so you have to rent it from them for an extra 10$. (it ends up being 26$ US per month)

My DSL is $34.99/month with 768U/768D speeds. As soon as they finish the line upgrades, I'll transition for free to 768U/1.5D. I hardly call that through the ass.

Bdawg you are one of the lucky few to have that kind of service offered at that price. In my area the highest upload I could even get would be 768 and that is considered for a business so it costs 250 a month.

SugaDaddy,

you forget that Canada has the best broadband internet network in the world.

That's why it costs $30 Canadian for us to get cable internet and at least $30 US for Americans. ;)

You are really lucky.

I am still waiting for DSL (two months since order placed). The problem isn't getting my line activated (activated two weeks after order placed). The problem is Earthlink is stupid and takes over a month to ship a DSL modem. When I checked my shipping status, it read "committed". What the heck does "committed" mean? They are not responding to my e-mails. I should have just gone with my local telco instead of earthlink.

thought it better then dial up it a hell of alot more to pay. my cousin who has cable say his is alot faster and he is only paying 29.95 and i'm paying 49.95
an average of 49.95-59.95 is the norm for dsl, for cable its 29.95 to 39.95
i dunno why it better to pay more for something that is slower like ISDN or Satellite.

When i lived in Nova Scotia up until last year, the way to go was DSL as the DSL there is a potential 7 Megabit connection for $40 a month Canadian and it had super low latency. The Cable there is the same as Cable here in Prince Edward Island, 5 megabit connection with low latency most of the time. When i see my friends connect into a server at University of Mass. with their Nova Scotia dsl. they ping 40 with their DSL...and i ping 70-100.

The DSL here sux though, 1 megabit and always falls offline.

Took Earthlink 2 weeks to activate my line but another 3 weeks to send my modem, luckly I had another modem from northpoint and went to dsl reports to get info on how to set it up. I've been on for 8 months now with no outages and Earthlink via Covad I have been getting 1.5 down/386k up 24/7 so I really can't complain.

As far as local telco DSL it's usually half as fast and half as reliable!

BTW: we have AT$T cable here but the dumbasses still haven't set us up for Cable internet service. They promised in 2000 then said by end of 2001. Now they say definitly in 2002! ( I won't hold my breath, also they are capping people at 1.5 so it's just not a great option anymore. )

Hope a new faster form of DSL comes along.

DSL around here is way slower.. and cable is 99.9% reliable.. you'd have to pay me a large sum to get me to switch to a much crappier service.

I'm sorry you don't believe me. If I get a chance tonight, I'll run a line test and post the results. Sunday night, I was hitting the high 600s for both U and D. :p

Yep. My local teleco (Nothstate) really rocks! When I have a problem, they're always right there to help out. They even gave me a free linksys router when we transitioned from IP to PPPoE so I wouldn't have to install winpoet/macpoet on my machines.

YEAH w00t! I pay just as much as cable in my area... and even though my PPPoE ip gets dissolved everynow and then, people here with cable get to powercycle more often than me! I STILL HATE PPPoE THOUGH!

When I moved into my house (2 years ago), I decided I wouldn't put up with the cable company and their crappy product and service ever again. So, I got a DirecTV, which I love, and later a DSL line that I also love.

The only downtime I ever have with my line is scheduled maintenance ever few months, and that's always between 4 and 6 AM. It's so refreshing to have a utility who cares about it's customers.

UP AND RUNNING!!!

512k / 128k

Yeah slower than cable but fewer outages!

Also just $39.49 a month! Instead of $39.99 +$10.00 for modem rental!
