I got a marketing call from an SBC/PacBell Rep offering me DSL service.
The operator said they had just upgraded a large portion of thier telephone network and are now able to offer DSL to nearly all of San Jose/ Santa Clara, CA.
Amazingly, right in 'Silicon Valley' there were a lot of places that did not have broadband coverage, (either DSL or Cable) If you live here and have been waiting for broadband you know.

At any rate, she said they are offering a package that is roughly (been a few days now) 16K - 512K upload, and 512K - 2.5M download. <rough guess>. She explained it's targeted to compete with cable (@home), for 0$ install and setup, 19.99 for the first three months, 45ish after, and !!! No contract or obligation.

I have heard a ton of grief about PacBell/SBC, so I'm not switching from cable. But if you have been stuck on dial up, this is awesome.
A friend of mine at work called, and had to ask specifically for this program, he was hooked up and online in less than a week!!

If you're on dial, and haven't checked your options lately, you should check this out.

Good luck.

I might be in the minority but I've had nothing but awesome performance and reliability from my pacbell dsl. I'm one of their first customers, and have had it for about 4 years now. routinely get 1.2mbps down and 128kbps (blech) up.

I had wicked billing issues with them, but I eventually got those fixed..

I can not complain, since they added an RT to my area, I can now get DSL. I have had no billing problems and have not lost service as of yet. I have had such good luck I had my in-laws switch over from a Earthlink we lost your account you will need to stop service and reapply for service, and had my parents get the DSL once the RT openned up in their area. I had lots of problems when I had to deal with Covad/Earthlink/and Pacbell...Just my 2 cents ..

interesting🙂 free modem? their service has been so @#% up, i think they told me i couldn't get it a while back even though my neighbor had service😛 my modems still run 28.8.. and its not cuzof my houses lines(they are new and tested by pacbell).
