DSL dropped connection

I have SBC DSL w/ a linksys NIC card and an Efficient Networks 5360 dsl modem and WIN2k.

I can connect to the internet just fine, but will get kicked off somewhere between 5 min - 1hr. After getting kicked off, I cannot log back on unless I completely reboot the computer (rebooting the modem only does not help). Obviously SBC support has been of no help and they say that the line is fine so to come out will charge me service time.

The PPPoE that came with the service was Enternet 300. I've since uninstalled that and using RASPPOE (which I've been told is more stable). However, the problem still persists. I've borrowed a different dsl modem from a friend and still have the same trouble (he has no problems with either his modem or my own - although he is using a router).

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I ran into such a problem, and a router cured it. You might see if he will let you borrow his to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's actually what my friend suggested as well. I'll give it a try.

Any thoughts as to why that would solve the problem?

When I get disconnected, I am always actively surfing, so not idle for more than a minute or two.

I've tried the router and still have the same problem. I connected a separate laptop to the router when I have been dropped and the laptop gets a connection to the internet w/o problem, but I cannot connect without rebooting the computer.

After I've been dropped, but before rebooting, if I ping the router it just says timed out. If I use the "ipconfig /renew" it tells me that the DHCP Server is unavailable. I don't think the problem is with the NIC card as I've bought a new one with the same results (and made sure I had the most up to date drivers).

Any thoughts? I am at a total loss as to what to do at this point? My friend seems to think that it may be some strange kind of virus and that I may need to reformat the hard drive. I'd rather keep that as a last resort, so I'm hoping someone has a better solution?

Well, it's almost certainly some sort of software on your machine (other machines work fine, you've changed hardware in the machine with same result).

My next suggestion would be to completely remove all your networking protocols and reinstall them. Remove any other types on internet connection you may have showing (like old dial-up from before you got DSL or something).
