I have a strange issue. I recently built a new computer and now my dsl dowload speeds are EXTREMELY slow.
My new computer is pretty good.

Amd Athlon 64 3200+
1 Gig Coursair value ram
120 gig Samsung Spinpoint Hd
eVga 6600 GT
DFI Lanpary Ultra-D mobo

This computer made my internet browsing and downloads a frustrating ordeal. My old computer that has an old intel modo and 1.7 Ghz P4 that I bought about 5 years ago has an old Realtek NIC card that i bought in some comp store I cant even remember. On my old comp i had download speeds that averaged around 150-250 kbits/sec.
The new comp gives me 40-89 kbits/sec MAX!!!!! (These speeds are when downloading from www.cnet.com, zdnet, etc)

I did not put my old Realtek card in the new comp and I'm using the integrated Marvell PCI Ethernet Gigabit controller. Is it the cause of my problem? I dont feel like gutting my old PC for the NIC card if I dont have to.
The funny thing is when I tried the www.buytelco.com speedtest, it gave me these results:

The Upload Speed is : 412.3 KiloBits/Sec
The Download Speed is : 1428.9 KiloBits/Sec

I used to get pretty close speeds to this on certain occasions before, but now I not get even 1/4 that under ANY circumstances.
My provider is Verizon, and I'm using the trusty old NON WIRELESS Westell modem.
I'm hoping someone here with the know how on this can help me.
Thank you.

sounds like possible mtu issues, you may need to change it, there are plenty of apps that will "optomise" it for you.

Anyone know of legit free mtu software? Theres a ton out there and I'm guessing many of them have spyware.

http://www.speedguide.net/ has some guides on how to tweak the mtu just with regedit, no install, no spyware and you learn how to do it yourself rather than relying on a program... means you can stuff with people mtu while there back is turned for a laugh...lol I would never do this though i usually clear their ie cache and scan for viruses while there back is turned.

actually I already used DslSpeed optimizer. The funny thing is that it doesnt seem to work as well on this new PC as it did on the old one. It starts, then immediately stops and says that everything is done, then i need to reboot. On the old PC it would work for a while, display the mtu bars on the server it was using for test, and only then it would ask me to reboot....
I'll go to that page you suggested and try to do what it written there.
