DSL Connection Tweaks Win2k

I was testing my DSL connection at DSLReports.com last night, and it suggested a few tweaks to increase my speed. I was able to do a couple (for example, RWIN size). It suggested I raise my current MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) to 1492 from 1460. I found many ways to do this in other OS's, but performing this in Win2K has baffled me. I have searched the registry for the proper key, and I did find an MTU key in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/TCP/Parameters/Interfaces...somewhere in there (I think that is the right location). Anyway, this didn't seem to affect my reported MTU at DSLReports (or any other connection benchmarking/analysis site). Does anyone know of a way to do this? I did DL a prog droctcp(sp?), but it only allowed me to change the MTU of my 3-Com nic, not my network adaptor (which is, by the way WINPoet, via Verizon DSL). Any ideas?

Optimizing the Network is helping in many cases, but at a certain point it is really overrated, the differences in MTU setting that you mentioned does not do too much.

I suggest to every DSL Connection owner to get a Router even if they have one computer. DSL works much better if the PPPOE is kept alive by a Router then with WinPOET (and you get a Hardware Firewall in the process).

Another possibility (if you don?t get a Router), is to replace WinPOET with RASPPPOE (its free). WinPOET is a problematic piece of software.

RASPPPOE, PPP over Ethernet Protocol for Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP.

Thanks. I didn't expect any big jump in performance with the MTU change; it just aggravated me that I could not find a way to alter the value. I do have a Barricade router, so I will probably hook that up. I might also try replacing winpoet with the software you mentioned. Thanks for the tips.

I spent a lot of hours on this Reg. setting, the reason it does not reflect in the reading has to do with the way the Reg. info. is stored in RAM, while the computer is working. If you do the change few times, and reboot after each time, it will eventually change.

If you use the Barricade you don?t need WinPOET or RASPPPOE, the best is to uninstall all the auxiliary software dished by the ISP.
