DS3 Coax Cables

I'd buy new cables. Why risk it?

I've seen many a DS3 get real flakey because of one thing...yep, you guessed it. The cable (bad crimp, etc)

I second the cable-replacing recommendation -- there is zero reason to risk a potentially defective setup.

Is standard RG59, 75 Ohm, coax cabling suitable for data and voice connectivity over DS3 ?

yes.

BNC connectors.

Why, then, do I see many sites selling plain ol' 75 ohm coax with BNC ends for cheap (5 - 10 bux a cable), versus some sites selling expensive "DS3 grade" cable (35 - 65 bux a cable) ?

Because they like to take your money. But the connectors could be better, the impedance could be tighter to 75 ohms, etc.

Spec calls for RG59 cable at 75 ohms.

but in all serisousness there are many different kinds of coaxial cables - all have different bandwidth properties. So not all RG59 is created equal. Belden has always made good cable. There is also other grades of coax - RG59, RG6, etc.

My problem is that I screwed up and orderd 12x RG59, 75 Ohm, coax cables with the F-Jack instead of BNC.

I'm going to have to suck up the shipping costs, both ways, to return them. Then I'll have to pay for new cables and shipping.

If the F-Jack -> BNC adapters are truly a bad idea, I will order all new cables. I just feel like the adapters are very very likely to do a fine job.

BTW...is there anyway to test the setup with the cable + adapter? Considering I don't have any spare DS3 circuits available to "play with".

I don't know man. that is your call.

I wouldn't do it. Not on a DS3 which is normally a cricital circuit and I just don't feel comfortable "rigging" it.

alright, I orderd a few new RG59 BNC -> BNC cables.

I also ordered a couple of the F-Jack -> BNC adapters.

I'll have an opportunity to do some CT&T (Circuit Turn-Up and Testing) next month, and I'll be able to play around with the cables on a hot DS3 circuit.

have fun.

A DS3 should have zero errors for months at a time. And even then to me anything more than a few hundred CRC errors in a year is the limit.
