Wife just rented a place for a temporary 2 year business (if it is long term, she'll relocate). The baseboard had to be removed (for wood floor installation). The baseboard was 25% unfinished 1x4s screwed into the wall. The 75% rest was cheap plastic stuff that was about the same height and glued to the wall.
Problem: The dry wall behind the 1x4s is pretty much disnintegrated - nothing is salvagable. The rest of the drywall on that wall is fine, but just not where the baseboard was at.
Problem 2: The glued on plastic baseboard. I pried a bit off and I either (a) left tons of glue residue that probably can be sanded off or (b) peeled a layer or two of the drywall paper with it. I had no control over which option occured.
So the questions are obvious:
[*]What is the best way to repair the drywall that had pretty much disintegrated? I thought about finding drywall scraps and just nailing/screwing it into place and then taping up the joint. What about just putting a board there instead and covering it up with new baseboard? Any problems with either method? Do I need to look out for further disintegration of the drywall that is left? As it isn't our building I don't care too much, but I'd hope whatever I do will last 2 years.
[*] What is the best way to remove the glued on baseboard? If some of the paper peels off can I spackle it back on, or do I need tape?
