dryers: electric or gas ?

I need a new dryer and was wondering which type is more efficient: gas or electric. Your thoughts?

Thank you!

Gas is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more efficient. (quicker to dry clothes, and cheaper to run)

The thing that keeps people from buying them is usually the lack of a gas outlet in the laundry room.

If you have a gas pipeline in your street, or gas service to your building, or any other gas appliances, go with gas! Initially you pay more for a gas dryer but it will pay for itself within the first year.

Yeah, what he said. a lot of people buy electric as well if they think they will be moving before they are done using the dryer because more homes are set up for electric dryers because of their greater popularity. I personally think it's a conspiracy perpetrated by the electric companies to keep us all addicted, but that's another story. 🙂

Gas is cheaper? My Xcel energy bill says I payd $190 in Gas and $40 in electric this month... I live in a 4 bedroom house so it takes alot to heat but still, electricity doesn't cost D!ck.

Turn off you gas furnace and try heating your house with a bunch of electric space heaters. See what the total of your two bills is then.

We run one 1500watter now in the bedroom cause it's not insualated very well, but if we did do the whole house your prolly right, I just know we do use a lot of elec as when I work in the garage I space heat it too, but the only other things that we have that uses lots of elec are the Dryer and the Water Pump ofcoarse. :/

This is my usage in kwh, I don't know much about this crap, is this alot?

Elec = October 9, 2001 November 7, 2001 802kwh

Gas = October 9, 2001 November 7, 2001 149therms

I have no clue what this equals, I was never good at this stuff? someone give me a rundown 🙂

Edit I checked out a appliance calculator, these guys are totally right gas is about 1/5th the cost of an electric!! :Q

Well, I'm slightly surprised that your electricity isn't higher with the space heaters.

Until I get proven wrong though, I think that if an electric dryer is $7/mo to run, a gas dryer is only $3 + a few cents to run the electric motor. Though that doesn't seem like much, a gas dryer gets done in 40 minutes what takes an electric an hour. My mom had to get an electric dryer when she moved. I've used it a few times and it sucks for speed. I know they're not all created equal, but if they were, gas would win every time.

No I checked out a appliance calculator, your completly right.. a Gas dryer is by FAR cheaper, I know Xcel formerly PSCO is supposed to be one of the cheapest electric companies in the US tho, so thats why my bill is cheaper, but even according to their site Gas Dryer is 1/5th the cost!

Per cost of useable energy you can get from gas vs. electricity, gas is far cheaper. Since you're using gas for heat, you'll get nearly perfect efficiency.

Go for gas.

Gas Baby! And my family can vouch for the reliability of Kenmore. Our current dryer is prolly 20+ years old. Still runs great. I don't know if its even need service yet.

Choosing and Using Appliances
  • In almost all cases, a natural gas appliance will be more energy efficient and cost less to operate than an electric model - but you'll usually pay a higher purchase price. The difference is usually about $50; if you choose a natural gas appliance, you can usually expect to save that amount in energy costs within two years.
