Rewind to last year. I buy a washer and dryer from a friend for like $250 for college, and try and hook the drier up. Dryer has a 4 prong cable, apartment is <1996 so it's got a 3 prong plug. I end up buying a 3 prong cable for $18 from Lowe's.
I just moved out a few weeks ago, and left the original 4 prong plug at the old apartment. I try and hook the dryer up here, since now I'm out of clothes that don't smell, and what do you know? 4 prong plug. I head back to Lowe's and buy another fucking cable for $18; this washer/dryer combo was now $300.
I take the panel off the back of the dryer that exposes the terminals for the cable, and as I'm putting the very last wire in, the screw falls down into the inside of whatever is in the back of a dryer. It looked like empty space behind the actual dryer guts, I could very easily lay this thing flat on its back to get the screw out or take the whole back panel off. I needed dry clothes right fucking then and there, so I just tried one of the screws holding the top half (controls) down to the dryer, and it fit. Hurray for being crafty.
