It's back again. Had it Sunday & Monday, got the socket packed with gauze on Monday afternoon. Now it's back again. And I've been avoiding all the things they told me to. No straws, smoking, or oral sex (Well, OK, they didn't say anything about that, but I had to assume...).

Owwwww...

<< no...oral sex >>

Oh no! And my wisdom teeth are almost ready to be yanked (no pun intended) and I'm 21 (guess a late bloomer?)

Hey Viper, just because you can't give, don't mean you can't receive (I'm not volunteering, mind) ;)

I'm having mine out some time in October.

I have a question, is it anything like getting regular molars out? I had a couple out because of orthodontic treatment, and it wasn't bad. Just wanted to know if I can relate it to something.

Never had molars out, but I can tell you what getting wisdom's out is like- first they inject your gums with anaesthetic. You wait a few minutes, they might give you some NO to relax you. Then, they commence to rip your teeth out of your gums, and even though logic would say it would hurt like mad, I didn't feel a thing. Just sit there while they yank and pull on your head. When it's done, suck on gauze for a while. That's it, overall it was rather painless.

Viper, Viper...<shakes head> I warned you. If I remember right, it helped to get some crushed ice and just hold it inside my mouth over the dry socket. Just don't suck on it, let it rest near your gums and GENTLY swallow it when it melts. And use the meds when you need them, but try to back off the prescriptions and use over the counter (no aspirin, but ibuprofen or acetaminophen are okay).

I've been bein' careful. Did everything just like they told me to, avoided the area at all costs. I think it's just my bad luck. :(

As for painkillers, Tylenol has been fine today. If it goes like it did last time, tomorrow I'll be back on Percocet. But I may go get it packed again tomorrow, if it still hurts.

Salt water, salt water, and more salt water. Take that plastic syringe they gave you and spray that stuff into the sockets like mad.

And if they didn't give you one, May god have mercy on your soul..

Dry socket is when the protective blood clot in the empty socket gets dislodged, exposing a nice fat bundle of nerves to the hostile environment of your mouth. Makes your whole jaw ache, especially your teeth.

or--if you're really lucky--you lose the clot, and the
bone of your jaw is exposed.

that's REALLY painful....trust me on that...

risks not healing, if the bone's exposed. they have to...
like....scrape the wound to make it bleed again...
hoping it will scab....

Huh. I still don't get it. Socket of what? what socket? Hehe..

Wait! Okay, after reading through the posts again, I think I've made an inference .. You mean the "socket" where your teeth go? And, this condition can happen after you've had a tooth pulled?

Yup. The empty hole left when you pull out the tooth is the "socket." There's a nice patch of nerves right there, & they don't much like air.

Napalm381:

When I got 2 lower molars out it was just 2 shots of anasthetic in the mouth, then he goes in there with this metal doohickey, grabs the tooth and rips it back and forth and brings it out. I could hear what was going on :)() but couldn't feel anything.

Bled like a bitch afterwards though.

I'm sure I was just as suseptible to dry socket afterwards...even though I didn't even know what it was back then.

:)

Good luck Viper
