Dry-Erase Desk

So I need to buy a new desk in a month, and I always liked sleek simple stuff. I rememberd at Ikea they had a glass desk that just had four-simple legs so I started searching for that. Then I thought to myself, why not take a dry-erase board and use that. That way I don't have to use post-it or paper ... I just write on the desk. Anyone do this already or try it? My only fear is that it wont hold up any weight ... but I have an LCD monitor and a laptop. So that plus my feet (I put my feet on my desk when I type) shouldn't be more than 35 lbs .... maybe I can brace it in the middle?

Using a section of the desktop as dry erase could be ok I guess but it doesn't make sense to use it for the whole thing.

I think BUILD is your key word. Best bet is probably to use an existing free-standing desk and cover the top with dry-erase material. I do however agree that you will have to be careful about where you lean/put stuff should you be successfull.

Most home improvement stores sell the dry erase material in 4x8' sheets for about $10. Look in the paneling section.

A whole desktop with dry-erase material sounds kinda weird. I'd go for a quarter of the desk dry-erase and the rest of it normal. Or just get a desk and get a small dry-erase board to put on top of the desk. I doubt you're gonna use the whole table for notes etc...if you do, you should just get a normal board and stick it on the wall.

I'd say just make one portion of the desk dry-erase material and the rest a normal desk. I don't think it'd work too well otherwise.

why don't you just buy the glass desk and a dry erase marker? You can write on and wipe off a glass desk just as easily as a white board desk. You can even use a permanent marker to write on the glass desk so that your sweaty socks don't erase everything then go over it with a dry erase marker when you need to erase it.
Just don't get too many scratches on the desk or you'll have a hard time erasing it...but the same applies to the dry erase board

Look at your desk now, and ask yourself if you'd really want to put all that crap on a dry erase board. It won't be just your laptop and an LCD on the desk, it'll be papers and keys and coins and drinks. It's a cool idea, but I don't really see it working. Now, dry erase walls...that would be cool.

I agree with this. I use dry erase markers on glass all the time. Besides, it will look cooler too being transparent and having the writing on the glass. Hell, maybe even sand blast the underside of the glass in an area to give it a more opaque, frosted look and use that area to write on. It will give your writing a sort of 3-D effect on the desktop. Hell, I guess what I'm really trying to say is, don't build some cheap ass, lame-o desk with dry erase paneling when you could have a nice glass top desk instead.

<sigh> My dream of a dry-erase desk, apparently, is something that this world just can't handle. I guess I'll settle for a glass-desk with markers nearby. At least I know that Ikea stocks one already (or they did 4 years ago ... the sucky thing about Ikea is you have no idea what anything actually is by it's name .... I mean an Anton .... what the hecks an Anton? It could be a table or the name of an African-American male ... you just have no idea)
