A bit off topic, but costco sells liquor cheaper than any other store I know, I usually get a fifth of Remy VSOP for $29 when its like $42 everywhere else. Not sure on Vodka prices.

Costco sells the large bottle of grey goose for ~35 I think. Only better deal is during drinking holiday sales at liqour emporium type stores (ie. new years)

Awesome price for some (hic) awesome booze! Is this bottle gonna fit in my freezer?

Anyone know if the NoVa Costcos sell booze? I'm pretty sure the Md. ones don't coz Monkey County controls booze sales.

Similar situation in TN. You can't sell beer and liquor in the same physical location (most liquor stores have separate entrances for their beer and booze areas) and liquor stores are closed on Sundays - damn bible belt.

Oh well, almost all of our Albertson's recently pulled out anyway. They seem to be turning into Publix.

The hottest deal at Albertson's liq. stores is always the Albertson's brand vodka. It runs about $9.99 per 1.75 L
I doubt many can taste the difference between cheap vodka and the super-premium brands.

U.S. Advertising laws prohibit companies from saying their vodka "tastes" any better than others.

"the US Bureau of Tobacco and Firearm?s definition of vodka as "neutral spirits without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color." -quoted from vodkaphiles.com

For those that think they can taste the difference, here's the results of the vodka taste test by the vodkaphiles: http://www.vodkaphiles.com/ranking.cfm

Note that Grey Goose went from 15th place to first in one year. Finlandia went from 1 to 13 in a year. Hmmmmm. Is this a quality control issue with the distiller, or an issue with "blind" tasting of vodka?
Absolut fell from 4 to 15 in a year.

Even if you can't taste the difference, I think you can tell the difference between vodkas the next morning ;)

I assure you there is a big difference between top shelf vodkas and cheap vodkas. You can tell the difference just by looking at a bottle. Since vodka is a "neutral spirit" the basis of premium vodka is filtering out all of the impurities. You can see sediment floating in a lot of the cheaper vodkas if you look close enough. The main difference you will tell is that vodkas like Ketel One and other top shelf vodkas are filtered many times. According to Ketel One they filter their vodka 5 times through a Charcoal filter. If you mix vodka, then yes it's hard to tell the difference, but in a martini a good vodka makes all the difference!

Agreed, MixMasterTang. That's why I keep a couple of 1.75's of cheap stuff for the mixed drinks, and a fifth of GG for the higher quality drinks ;).

Lol, all this talk about liquor is making me thirsty!

Yes, that definition is true. But most cheap and nasty vodkas have all sorts of nasty off tastes that make sure the 'vodka' doesn't fit that definition. A good vodka should taste smooth and neutral, and allow the taste of whatever you use as a mixer to come through. In a martini the difference is like night and day, but since my preference is for regular (gin) martinis I don't get to compare that aspect very much.

It isn't true that the more you spend the better you get. In Ohio, Skyy Vodka costs about $15 for a 750mL bottle vs. $22 for Absolut and I can tell you that the Skyy absolutely kills the absolut. In fact I think Absolut is really no better if not worse than Smirnoff at $11 a bottle. I can tell you this from taste and from after night/next morning effects. It wouldn't surprise me if a store brand at $9.99 for a 1.75 L bottle is at about the same quality level as Absolut (because I think very few vodkas can be worse than Absolut). The best value I think is Skyy, and the best choice if you want to spend a little more is Stolichnaya at about $20 for a 750mL bottle. I usually order Grey Goose/Ketel One at clubs and bars because an extra dollar or two gets you Grey Goose over Paramount diluted moonshine, but I think $35 for the bottle is quite steep. At the end of the day, I still think Skyy fits the definition pretty well.

uhh thanks for reminding me how crappy oregon is.. even businesses dont get a discount.

btw if anyone is comparing garbage vodka to premium vodka as the same they cant possibly know what theyre talking about. Some of that cheap stuff is so bad that no amount of mixer will get rid of that choking butane smell and taste. You must be 14, have too many coors light parties, and have tried 2 brands that some bum got for you at the 7-11.

If anybody wants some real opinions: ketel 1, finlandia, and our local favorite crater lake vodka are all excellent for 20$ a fifth up here, usually only 5$ more than smirnoff. yeah yeah you all not in the NW probably get good stuff for like 10$..

Yeah I agree about the cheap vs expensive stuff = a BIG difference.

When I was a banker we'd wine and dine and sometimes pick up a round of $200 a glass highend fuel :). Big differences, even the stuff I hated was actually pretty good most of the time, it always seemed smoother and less alcohol tasting....

Those that usually say they can't tell the difference are comparing a $10 bottle to a $20 bottle, not a $100 or more bottle....

Still I prefer beer no matter how fat my wallet is. Asti is cool with a chick since it helps the bonding when you are sharing something.

Combine this with the vaseline/astroglide/trojan/etc deals and you'll have the best deal ;)

I have friends that say they can't stand any form of hard liquor. I think it's because they haven't tried any good hard liquor.

Anyhow, can you name a $100 bottle of Vodka or Gin?

That's because (as has been mentioned several times above) you're buying about $7 worth of advertising with that bottle of Absolut. :)

I wasn't referring to either Vodka or Gin specifically, but alcohols in general, with whiskey and cognac high-end makes a difference definitely:

Vodka: Gin: Rums: about $20-30 you are entering high end :) I think there are a few that break the $50 per bottle mark...I am sure there are rarities at over $100 per bottle

Cognac, a popular example: Remy Louis XIII $1500-2000, the XO is still about $200 a bottle Courvoisier L'Esprit or Napolean, $6000 is a good price for a bottle.

Whiskeys: Bourbons, Scotches: These can go up to and over $250

Tequilas: Some hit $300+

Liquors/Liqueurs: all over the field some could be $100 a sip.

that reminds me of an love@aol personal reply....I had been using them while single to fill in empty date nights :)

This lady had a model picture as her's (a professional pic obviously) and claimed she came from some cow town and wanted to see the world, discover sex, and all this fluff...so I replied 'have you been out to any club yet, you'd discover sex within 2 minutes if that's your thing'.

She replied, she tried, but the guys she thinks are too intimidated (her best friend told her this :) ).....

She said if I shipped some nice wine or goldslager (sp) to her, to let her know I am serious, she'd call me when she recieves it and we'd share it and let the night 'run wild, if you don't tell, I won't tell...just make sure it's wrapped in brown paper and doesn't look like a bottle, my roommate is an alcoholic and may steal it'.

Obviously a teenager with a good idea, I am sure many guys shipped off alcohol in hopes of a perfect 10.

heheh

I bet you were one of them. :p

The reason a lot of these cognacs and whiskeys are so pricey is that they're aged for years, even decades.
