Raleigh ? Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in a fatal accident on Interstate 40 in Raleigh.

According to the Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old man in a Chevrolet Tahoe crossed the median onto westbound I-40 near the Wade Avenue exit, striking another vehicle. Troopers said the driver of the second vehicle died in the accident.

Investigators said the Tahoe then struck a Ford Mustang. The driver of the Mustang was injured.

According to the Highway Patrol reconstruction team, tire tracks left by the Tahoe suggest the vehicle was going so fast through the median that it was turned sideways.

The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe was taken to WakeMed. His extent of his injuries is not yet known. There is no word yet on his blood-alcohol content. The Highway Patrol is also looking into the driver's immigration status.

The names of the driver and others involved in the accident are not yet known.

Westbound traffic on I-40 was detoured throughout the morning onto Wade Avenue, across the ramp back to I-40. Crews have since re-opened the lanes to traffic.

Possible illegal immigrant too?? :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

that's a very unfortunate story. i remember my physics telling us that drunk drivers always live because they are relaxed.

so when they get into an accident, their bodies absorb the shock so they live as if you weren't drunk you would tense up.

very sad

drunk drivers tend to live because their body is extremely loose, and not tense during said collisions. its sad, unfortunate, but it tends to be that a tense body is going to hit anything, such as the seatbelt even, with much more power and the power, instead of absorbing and forcing the body to bounce as if rubbery, kind of just slams into a person, and the force gets concentrated in single areas and causes bones to break.
thats why you also see most drunk drivers walk away relatively unscathed, at least in the broken bones department.

i remember being taught that, or reading it somewhere, but it makes perfect sense, especially once you find the statistics.

heh heh, poster above me was taught the same thing. 🙂

Possible future safety device: "Pre-collision alcohol injection" ?

Story has been updated (video in OP link)

Raleigh ? Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in a fatal accident on Interstate 40 in Raleigh.

According to the Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old man in a Chevrolet Tahoe crossed the median onto westbound I-40 near the Wade Avenue exit, striking a blue Kia. Troopers said the driver of the second vehicle, George Alwyin Smith, 54, of Cary, died in the accident.

Investigators said the Tahoe then struck a Ford Mustang driven by Carolyn Hageman, 35, of Crooked Brook Road in Apex. She was taken to Western Wake Hospital with minor injuries.

A passenger who was also in the Tahoe was taken to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries. Authorities are still in the process of determining the names of the driver and passenger in the Tahoe.

Troopers have charged the driver of the Tahoe with driving while impaired, reckless driving, no operators license. He has also been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and felony death by motor vehicle.

Westbound traffic on I-40 was detoured throughout the morning onto Wade Avenue, across the ramp back to I-40. Crews have since re-opened the lanes to traffic.

Tahoe vs Mustang probably didn't help either. Have they confirmed his BAC yet?

The person that died was driving a KIA. The Mustang was the second vehicle hit. If you see the video, the mustang looks relatively intact.

Kinda like how Jackie Chan can take a lot of physical punishment as drunken master.

I didn't watch the video and didn't notice a KIA mentioned in your post. I do see now that it says the Mustang was the second vehicle struck. I guess I wasn't paying very close attention.

More updates:
Smith was on his way to work as a computer programmer at Duke University when he was hit, authorities said.

His friends and relatives struggled Monday to cope with the loss of a man they described as an avid gardener with an infectious laugh and a caring nature.

"He just touched lives. That's the kind of person he was. He was a shoulder to cry on. He was somebody to laugh with -- just an amazing person," longtime friend Gia Wright said. "He was such a good friend to my mother. One of the memories I'll always have of him was him showing up with flowers for her all the time, just freshly cut from the garden, just because."
The man had a North Carolina driver's license with his picture on it, but he told troopers that the name wasn't his.

The passenger in the Tahoe, who was taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries, had a Mexican identification card with his own picture and the same, apparently fictitious name from the driver's ID, authorities said.

Federal immigration officers are investigating the status of both men, who troopers said left Concord early Monday and were on their way to work.

Troopers have charged the driver of the Tahoe with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and once count each of felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving and having no operator's license.

"To think that it is OK to (drink and drive), it doesn't matter if you're illegal, if you're visiting or if you've been born and raised here, drunk driving, there's no excuse for it. It's just another precious, valuable life that's been taken away," Wright said. "How many people have to die before somebody gets it?"
🙁

Fuggin' illegal that snuck across the border :|:|
De Latorre, who works for a concrete company in Concord, had some form of identification with his picture on it, but he told troopers that the name on the ID wasn't his.

Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement determined De Latorre was the man's correct name. Recardo De Latorre was captured twice in 2004 trying to cross from Mexico into California, and his fingerprints matched those of the driver in Monday's wreck, authorities said.

Immigration authorities have no record of De Latorre in the past three years, and he has no criminal record.

Concord? That figures--there have been notable fatalities in the Charlotte area caused by drunk illegals. Among the victims (in separate incidents) were a teacher and a bright UNCC student, who was himself an Asian immigrant, but legal.

Based on what I've seen, I can't help but think that certain segments of society have little regard for their communities.

They were coming from Concord and crashed in Raleigh. So this dude drove for 2.5 hours (I-85 to I-40) drunk before crashing.

Unfreakingbelieveable
