If staying drug free is one of the conditions for receiving this benefit then test away. I've had to be subject to random drug screenings to hold jobs so why shouldn't a welfare recipient have to do the same to retain their benefits?

Chances are that alot of people on welfare dont have the dicipline, if they did they would have that job.
What comes after welfare when they miss that drugtest? Nothing? Are we ready to fill the streets with 100.000 additional homeless people? They might have an addiction, addiction turns to crime, crime turns to ... etc.

It would be to disheartening to learn that most of those really stupid people we know aren't under the influence of anything; they are just dumb.

Testing might be good from a societal angle if a positive test results not in benefits cuts, but mandatory counseling and/or rehab instead. Of course, this is not on the minds of most that advocate testing, since it actually costs money up front, though it could produce future savings if it straightens some people out and helps them up out of their possibly drug-exacerbated poverty.

Conceptually, it does make sense that if you're on the dole, society has more stake in whether you spend time getting high or not than if you are managing to pay your own way.

Many reasons. First of all drug tests at work ate pretty much worthless for identifying people who will perform poorly at work or are a risk just like credit card background checks are (both are rooted in discriminatory beliefs). More importantly people who already have substance abuse issues are the people who most need social support such as medicaid and food stamps. It's seems stupid to take away treatment for substance abuse based on having a positive test. It's like taking away social security benefits if the recipients bank account doesn't have a certain amount of funds because low funds is a sign of poor money management. Substance abusers already have difficulty enough with finding and maintaining jobs and feeding their families. The ones that are able to stop using drugs generally are the ones who need the least support. Society doesn't need to make a bad situation worse and penalize the vulnerable such as children and elderly who depend on these individuals.

The fact of the matter is if you don't like substance abusers then just be honest about it. But having such tests based on the notion that somehow it helps them or helps society is a blatant lie.

It's all about dehumanizing people who find themselves in the position where they & their kids could use some assistance. Not good enough. Losers. Good fucking.

Credit checks are illegal unless its job related such as for a security or banking position. At work they guard against hiring negligence as a drug user is a higher risk for injury to themselves and their coworkers and I absolutely support the practice.

In the wrong hand it most certainly could be used that way. I see it as a way to identify those in need to offer them additional help to get them back on their feet so they can become productive again or at least break free from the habit breaking the cycle. Left to their own they will perish without assistance, however, if they refuse the help then it should affect their ability to obtain benefits.
