Drug Testing Question...

Ok... so I was offered a nice position that i'm pretty excited about and they want me to take a drug test. Normally I really wouldn't have a problem with this as I haven't done any sort of drugs in the last couple of years... however just recently (within the last week or two) i've met some friends who have smoked marijuana and I have been in the same general area. It's not liked I baked out with them someplace, I only really got a small dose of second hand smoke... certainly nothing that would get me even close to being high. How is that second hand smoke going to affect the results of the test though? I really think i might be over reacting about this... but I feel like a lot is riding on this job and if it is jeapordized by this it'll really be a tough blow.

Well, yeah it does matter. If anything it would ease my mind so i'm not so freaked out by it. All i'm really asking is if you have to inhale signifigant amounts of the crap to test positive... or if even minor second hand amounts will show a + as well.

If you are concerned, be sure and drink lots of water between now and when you test.

Lots.

Supposedly the herbal supplement goldenseal is supposed to be able to mask traces of marijuana in the system. I've had a few patients come to me in the pharmacy and ask me for it and if it works. I tell them that I don't think it works but they can try it. They basically have nothing to lose since they're going to get caught in a few days at the drug test before the interview (or after) anyways...but it's worth a shot.

I get random drug tests and second hand can show up but it shows up as second hand. Don't worry about it.

Yeah you're definetely going to be fine, but I would drink a fair amount of water on the day of the test just to be sure. They have margin of error and things like that for this situation, it's all good.

From here

Second hand smoke and positives:
It is possible that second hand [marijuana] smoke will raise someone to the 50 ng/mL level ; however, *extreme* exposure is required. For instance, a closed car full of pot smokers and a non-smoker may render the non-smoker positive for both urinalysis testing and the hair testing, provided that they are sealed in the car for a while. The non-smoker would have to take in virtually as much second hand smoke as a smoker. Non-smokers are safe in a ventilated area, as long as they don't get a hair test. Simply blowing crack smoke on ones hair may cause a positive hair drug test. Second hand pot smoke doesn't affect the hair drug test results as much as crack smoke does mainly because exhaled smoke contains no THC. The only pot smoke that contains THC is the smoke that hasn't entered the lungs.

There is no way to distinguish between first hand or second hand in GC/MS testing. Explain to me how in the fvck they could tell the method in which you acquired so many ng/ml of THC?

Actually, GoldenSeal is so effective at masking, it is now part of the drug screen. If one shows positive for GoldenSeal, it is assumed that the GoldenSeal is being used for such a purpose and becomes a default positive for drugs, and the individual is on the hook to prove he/she is clean, usually by hair analysis. Hair is used because it can show drug use for many previous months.

It's been covered in the thread. You're fine, don't even worry about it. Life as normal.
