The Drug prices are killing our seniors, the same drug are been sold 50% cheaper in Canada, Why the goverment dont care about our seniors? They make the excuse that rest of the money are going to "research" labs, well anytime a new drug is coming out is so expensive.

Canada has a different government which allows them to set prices, where it MAY be unconstitutional to do so here. Also, drug companies have so much influence in politics, that I do not see anything happening regardless.

The US allows the drug companies to rape the american people. Corporate lobbyists and huge campaign donations keep washington in check. The house voted on the re-importation bill about a week ago thanks to Rep Emerson making a deal with the repubs allowing an up or down vote, and it passed. Hopefully it will be agreed to in conference with the senate and dubya doesnt veto. This would make the drug companies compete with the lower prices in other contries. This would save the American people billions of dollars

I heard an ad on the radio urging us as concerned voters and citizens to contact our local representative and urge them to vote against the easing of medicines from other countries because they would bring in inferior quality medicines. I heard an ad on the radio urging us as concerned voters and citizens to contact our local representative and urge them to vote against the easing of medicines from other countries because they would bring in inferior quality medicines. I about wrecked the car I was laughing so hard.

we have a new law where I live that makes it mandatory for someone who prescribes a drug to give a generic drug if it exists. This makes it cheaper for the patient and the insurer (the govt.). The only one who gets shafted is the drug company

I've got blue cross and blue shield/ a non-profit health insurance company My cost for perscriptions is 10 for generic, 20 for non-generic, and 35 for "the good stuff(most medicines are this)"

7 years ago I had a for profit health insurance coverage, Partners, and it was 5 bucks for any medicine. Needless to say I see absolutely nothing wrong with buying meds from Canada or Mexico nowadays.

Actually in most foreign countries, the government strikes a deal with drug manufacturers to purchase them in bulk at whatever rate they agreed upon. Drugs aren't subsidized by countries. In America, drugs are priced at whatever the drug companies feel like. The problem is that their isn't any competition and people are at the mercy of the drug companies. You either pay $400 a month in medications, or you die. Health services and medication should not be treated as goods which they currently are. The sad thing in all of this as that I've read that the pharmaceutical industry had profit margins that were 4 times higher than Forbes 500 corporations. What can be done? Our only hope is to import medication from Canada since this is what goes on in Washington

Pharma spends a lot more money on advertising than they do on R&D. I think we should ban direct to consumer advertising of prescription drugs.
The cost of this advertising is passed on to the consumer, and it drives up demand for drugs, increasing prices. Also, there is nothing stopping consumers from buying prescriptions from Canada and enjoying the benefits of their price controls, now is there?

I used to generally agree but this only attempts to treat a symptom. Besides it's rather draconian. Other industries advertise heavily yet are able to sell their products at low prices. Wal Mart comes to mind as do pizza joints. If you put this restriction on Wal Mart it would actually lead to increased product costs for consumers as demand for Wal Mart stuff drops.

Something else is behind the increased cost of drugs.

No we don't. Even though drug prices are much cheaper here, the drug co's are still making profits(without any special funding from the government), just not as much as in the US.

IMO you got it all wrong. Look at the post I made in aother thread (can americans explain to me why...) and you will see that R&D cost are marginal when you compare it with the total turnover of the pharmaceutical industry in the USA and Europe

WOW! And i don't agree with either of you. A company can charge whatever they want for thier product as long as they are not a monoply. Don't like it? don't buy it... And there are alternatives to every medication you can ask the Doctor for.

Cost lots of money for R and D, for every drig thats a hit there are thousands reseached that go nowhere and they still have to pay millions for each to research.

We lead the world in pharmacuticals for this reason, please do not vote to destroy another industry.

I don't agree with expensive R&D.

The propecia drug came off finasteride (prostate problems). You pay more for 1mg than you would with a 5mg finasteride tablet and you gel less with propecia.

Some R&D. Just Greed. No value for human life. Just the bottom line.
