Really? The Turbo STI beats the Turbo 911? That's impressive.

EDIT: BTW, I grew up driving fast cars, I definitely enjoy driving. But cars will always be more of a status symbol to me, just like anything else. If I had to choose between any Japanese car, and any of the major european brands, I'd choose the Euro. I'd take a BMW 325i over a WRX Sti any day.

Show me where I said an STi would beat a 911 Turbo. You're just making stuff up now. Pathetic.

Well, if status is more important to you then so be it. I'd take the STi over a 325i though, pocket the extra $5-10k I saved and enjoy stomping the crap out of the German cars and American muscle all day long. 😀

Oh, I just assumed you'd put one turbocharged car against another. It also occurs to me that the non turbo Porsche Carrera GT3 costs less than the regular 911, and is one of the fastest cars around the top gear track (tying w/ the Ferrari 360 CS). Either way, it's kind of silly to compare a $25k car to a $90k car. Even if the base 911 is slower in a few categories, it's obviously a better and more well rounded car.

GT3 and GT3 RS are different cars... 😛 The regular GT3 is $100k and the RS is around $140k IIRC...

Yes, the STOCK spolier is functional too... probably moreso than a flimsy aftermarket piece. You can do a proper turboback exhaust and not attract cops with it... my turboback isn't that loud and I've heard numerous turboback cars like Supras, DSMs, WRXs, Zs that all sounded relatively staid yet did pick up the benefits of better spoolup and power without sounding like giant exploding farts. That boxer engine does sound nice...

No the spoiler does not do anything when the car is traveling within the speed limit.

I'm not really comparing them because I haven't recently driven a 911. That would really be the only basis for making an honest comparison (personally). However, Road & Track did recently compare these two cars for their best car 2004 award and the WRX STi did beat the Porsche 911 Carrera along with the other finalists in the contest the BMW 5 series, Mazda RX-8 and the Nissan 350Z Roadster.

I've certainly never driven a 911 turbo and I know that it is much faster than the WRX-STi. I was just comparing stats and commenting on my own personal experience driving the STi. I think it is the best bang for the buck car available. That's why I bought one. 😀

You end up picking up that modified one?

No, I bought a brand spanking new stock one. 6.6 miles on it!

Crystal Silver Metallic with silver wheels. I pick it up tomorrow. Can't wait!!!

😀

Well, anyone who'd take a WRX STi or not over a Porsche has simply never owned a fast car. I can tell you that the difference in a fast car, and the difference in a luxury sedan is huge. One is FUN as hell, and the other is just so comfortable, relaxing and easier to drive. I own one of each, but I'd never own a fast car for my primary car again(heavily modded that is).

Well most guys getting a 325i aren't going to be wanting top notch performance as they sure as hell can get a cheaper car and mod it etc. Or just get an STi. They want image and such etc. BUT if that helps their career then why not? You sure as hell don't want to turn up to customer houses with an STi and that could screw your deal over etc.

Sure the STi is faster but some people want creature comforts.

I've not driven any fast cars but I'll save my £££ and hopefully get one sometime 😀

JulesMaximus - cograts man. A lot of people here dont respect good engineering. I love the sti. I think it is an awesome car. Love the performance of it. I have read/heard so much about it that i wanna go drive it. Congrats again. Advice: Very easy to go fast with performance cars and not realize you are going so fast. I got a ticket in my g35 not realizing i was going too fast. So the advice is to just keep it slow - these cars are simply put - too fast.

Well since I actually own a 2000 911 I figured I would chime in....my ride is a 2000 911 carrera speedyellow (non-turbo) with the aerokit....

Since most of you will never own or drive a new or even an old 911 I find it funny how you can cut down a car based on a test drive against a subaru sti.....I can't even dispute the fact that an STI will beat a 911 in a straight line because it probably will, on the same hand you can get a 2000 or so vette for around 30k and smoke either one of them in a straight line....when you buy a porsche you are buying a full package....tires/brakes/motor/suspension/prestige/looks etc, sure you may find a car for less that can beat it in one category but you aren't gonna find one that does as well in them all.....that's why I bought a 911 and until you've owned one, you just don't know....

I actually lost off the line to a mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 the other day, it was modified and he overtook me about 100m down the line, then again I don't beat on my car so I didn't redline it but just for comparison......

Lastly a GT3 costs more then a regular 911 .......... base 911 is 70k but to make it interesting its about 85-90 (mine was 89k new but I got it for 54k last year with 10k miles hurrah for me 🙂 ) and a base gt3 is like 95-100.....GT3 is an awesome car.....

*and this wasn't meant to cut down on the sti which for 30k I'm sure is an awesome car.....just putting some perspective....I believe a better argument would be comparing the sti to cars in it's class like the evo and such...

Congrats JulesMaximus! I had a feeling you wouldn't be able to resist once you got to drive it.

You'll love it. I still crack a small grin sometimes when I get into the car, after nearly a year of owning it.

Just remember to take it easy during the break-in period. It's hard because there's one hell of a beast waiting to be unleashed. Do everything you can to contain that urge to let her loose. 😛

Thanks for the condescending diatribe. Congrats, you've renewed my faith in Porsche and their owners...

I've driven them. I guess actually plunking down the cash makes you feel somehow superior to the rest of us?

actually now that I've reread what I wrote I kinda realize what a condescending a$$ I sounded like....would like to apologize for that....my comment was directed to those cutting down on the car who've never driven it, not everyone here......

*and as i mentioned it wasn't meant to cut down on the sti...I'm sure it's an awesome ride...and to each his own...

anything built after 99' hasn't held it's value for *crap*.........all you gotta do is check ebaymotors and kbb to see that....on the flip side the 95-98 911's have held their value very well.....

Basically porsche's dirty little secret is that in the early-mid 90's they were losing a lot of money and probably wouldn't have been in business much longer....Anyways they had some japanese guys come in and show them how to make their business more profitable, and since then they have made a ton of money but have also had a few more issues with their cars...the leather is much cheaper now and their is an design problem in the m96 engine (97 boxster on up as well as 99 911's on up including the turbo's but excluding the gt3)....it's that the rear main seal starts leaking which drips on the clutch and ruins that as well....already had the problem in my 99 boxster and it's not a cheap repair due to porsche dealers way overcharging for their services......

Congrats, man!

I'm actually very tempted to pick up a turbocharged car. I had my heart set on a normally aspirated car(have had a deposit down for almost 9 months now), but I have the feeling I'm going to miss the performance (and ease of modification) of a turbocharged vehicle. Difficult decision. 🙁

What do you expect? I get my car serviced at the Audi/Porsche dealer, and I've seen them quote labor time on Porsche's. If you can afford a 911 and a Boxtser you probably don't care THAT much. I have to say though, I'm glad I bought an A4 instead of a Boxster. My service is paid for via Audi, and the service people are all the same. I get the same exact perks as anyone with a Porsche.

audi's are awesome cars as well....goes back to paying for that german engineering....too bad bmw decided to start producing cars in china....
