Drove a modified WRX-STi this afternoon

I drove up to another Subaru dealership today and was able to drive a WRX-STi. This one was not stock either. The dealer's son owns this car, it is black with dark tint, exhaust, intake, aftermarket blow off valve, body kit, lowered, 19" wheels and an even bigger rear spoiler. Oh, there was a large decal diagonally across the rear of the car from the roof to the bottom of the doors. Not my cup of tea but it gave me a good idea of how this car drives.

OMFG!!! This car is the fastest car I've ever driven. And talk about fun! This is more fun than should be legal...well, I wouldn't outlaw fun like this anyway. I took put my son's car seat in the back, strapped him in and off we went. I started out easily in first just easing it out onto the street-no traffic either. As I went up through the gears I gave it a little more and a little more with each shift and then really got into it after a stop light. That car goes like a scalded cat! That blow off valve was whooshing between each shift and the exhaust was definitely audible in the car. If I owned this car I don't think I would ever turn on the stereo. The sounds it makes are too much fun to listen to.

The thing is the car was completely drivable though. Idled smoothly, reved easily and was very comfortable, even though it is a tad stiff. It did not sacrifice much in ride in my opinion, I'm sure that stock it is even better-depending on your point of view ;). Maybe if I were driving it over pot holes or dips all day but I'm not. I loved it though. This will be my next car. It's just a matter of when. They had a silver one with gold rims but they are going to swap the wheels with a black '05 STi with silver wheels on Monday.

I have to say, anyone who thinks the STi is rice and should be dismissed as another race car wanna be is very mistaken. This is a friggin' street legal race car!

Update-I bought one today. Not the modded one but a brand new stock STi. I pick it up tomorrow! :D

BTW-The car I drove had 2600 miles on it and I did hit the rev limiter once during my drive and the shift warning came on a couple times.

This car is mad fun!!!

Jeez that thing sounds fugly. I wouldn't mind driving one, but I hate the spoiler.

I saw\heard a WRX yesterday. I was wondering what was that whoosing sound it was making after each gear shift.

Yeah, the one I drove wasn't for sale and the stock STi is much less outlandish. The son works at the dealership and his pimped out car sits on the showroom floor. Maybe he got too many tickets or something or is paying for his insurance by working there and letting customers drive his car. Maybe he is just a hard working kid. I don't know. I didn't ask...didn't care. I was just happy to get behind the wheel of a WRX-STi.

This particular car was pretty over the top but behind the wheel it was just plain fun. I forgot all about the visual impact of the car after I put my seatbelt on. :D

I talked to the son and he said with all his mods his car is probably putting out about 315hp (which is only 15hp over stock). He probably has another $10k into the car but it doesn't drive like a heavily modded car. I liked it and couldn't get the grin off my face for about a 1/2 hour after I drove it.

This is a car that will beat a Porsche 911 Carrera 0-60!

Er, I don't think anyone would ever dare say that the STI is another race car wannabe

Until it goes 0-60mph in under 2 seconds while staying street legal I will remain unimpressed.

Well, I'm pretty impressed. Considering it will do it in under 5 seconds and this is a car that costs $30k. Porsche 911 Carrera can't beat this and it costs 3 times that!

$30K for a boy-racer, with econobox interior? At least the Porsche is worth every penny. I would get a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT, you get a handsome sedan inside and out.

Spoken like someone who has never enjoyed driving...or driven a pure driving machine and enjoyed it. Dumbass. You don't know anything about cars. If all you think cars are for is getting pu$$y you're an idiot.

To me, Porsche has lost something in that it now builds and sells status symbols rather than a pure driving machine.

BTW-The stock Subaru STi will beat a stock 911.

Sounds like a molested riced-out STi... *sigh* why is it that cars like that go to people that shouldn't own them.

Oh, and my reasoning is quite simple...
it rides bad because you slapped on "blingbling" 19s not to mention being heavier than the stockers with the expensive stock tires
dark tint so you can't see anything anymore
aftermarket blowoff valve because you wanna make noise and cause your car to stumble between shifts (iirc that's metered air)
intake for more noise, exhaust for more noise (mufflers are as far as most ricers go but catback isn't enough for a turbo car)
body kit... why? cause the one that came engineered from Subaru wasn't good enough?
bigger wing... cause he wants to fly?
decals... well... it proves my point... he's using his car as a poseur-mobile when it should be on a track!

KokomoGST does have some good points on the BOV and intake. Especially the intake, does more harm than good on the WRX.

Rowr! The STi is really a beast. I would have to swap the trunklid for a non-spoilered one, though - that wing is more than I can handle.

I agree 100%. I would never do these things to a car like this. I probably wouldn't do anything to it in fact other than a light tint on the rear windows to keep my son out of the sun and possibly a speaker upgrade. My point is that this car is an incredible car for the money.

While the whoosh of the BOV sounds nice it is a completely useless mod. The exhaust was just a cop magnet. No thanks. Give me a stock STi and I'll be happy...and still be able to beat almost any production car.

I heard a modified WRX one night...well I heard it before I saw it. At first I thought it was a muscle car revving, but as I looked around the intersection and streets I couldn't find any. Then the lights turned green and I heard hte WRX rev off along the street. I dunno what kind of exhaust work that guy had done, but that WRX had a sweeet V8 thrashy growl.

I lust for a WRX/STi now...LUSSSSSSSST

I don't recall ever looking out the rear window when I drove it. My senses were focused on what was in front of me and the car itself. The spoiler isn't really noticeable from inside the car actually. And it is functional.

BTW-The '05 STi has underbody aerodynamic bits to aid in downforce at high speeds. This is a well engineered car.

I hear ya, but frankly I would be self-conscious about it, and it would indisputably attract cops. The spoiler can't possibly do any good until you are at speeds so high (100+ MPH) that they would be irrelevant to me anyway. I love the car, but the spoiler is a drawback from my perspective.

Really! Porsche not a real driving machine! Hmmm....Better switch my dream of buying a porsche and buy a Subaru instead.
I'm sure that you know your sport cars very well. Could you tell me how many Porsche's have you owned to come to this conclusion.
