Need some help here...

I mistakenly dropped my laptop today. It has an active matrix screen (Toshiba Satellite 2545 CDS). The screen still works, but on the upper left hand corner it's pitch black 1/2 inch wide and about 6 inches long. This has effected the right side of the screen too, but only slightly.

Do I need a new screen? If so, how much does one cost?

If not, how much should the repair run me and what the h*ll did I do?

Any help appreciated.

EEEOUCH, not a good thing. Couldn't have happened to a more expensive part, either!

Since it's a stripe, and fairly solid, that rules out the lamps, so it's probably either an interface problem or you blew whole segments of the LCDs. Either way, it's a great time to get that updated replacement laptop!

Size matters, but even if it's only a 12.1" screen, you're looking at around $600-700 US for the part alone, not to mention labor. I've seen some nice Satellites advertised for $1399, and Compaqs for even less. Your call...

Good luck!

I recommend have it checked by a competent shop first . Sometimes it's just a connector that got loose during the fall. If not they can tell you if you need replacement. If this is the case, you're probably better off buying a new one since it cost almost the same if you replaced the LCD. Then maybe auctioned off the damage one.

Do not try to open the laptop unless you know what you are doing!!! A friend opened his from work and couldn't get it back together. The repair cost his company $1000. I had a Compaq that the screen looked like it was closed with something laying on the keyboard, but it wasn't. It had a 2" wide multicolor stripe across the middle of the screen. I believe it was heat related because it was put back in the case turned on until the battery ran down. It cost $900 to fix. Laptops are a pain. R.
