Dropped my car off at the garage this morning...

This morning I got into my car, started it, and let it warm up while I brushed the snow off. Then I got in, and put it in drive. Nothing happens.

I'd step on the gas, and the engine would rev. Eventually it rolled forward a little, but not much before it stopped. Reverse, same thing.

It would kick in once in a while, and get up as high as maybe 20mph, but then it would die again (engine still running) and I'd have to push it.

I ended up having to push it to my local mechanic. I did have the transmission replaced last summer, and I'm overdue on my oil change. Any thoughts?

I hate to be the bearer of ill tidings, but I agree with BassBomb - it sounds like your transmission is dead.

Same thing happened to my car, they gave me a $1800 repair bill and I still ended up paying another $500 later on to extend the warranty another 5 years. In the end if I had known it would have been so much hassle, I would have junked it and spent the $3k on another used car.

That's what I was afraid of. I can't remember how long the warranty on this one was, but I think I've had it seven months.

This is why you see so many cars for sale cheap that say something like 'New engine and/or transmission only XXX miles old'. The places that do the refurb/rebuild/install work are not 100% dependable, and quality/craftsmanship varies wildly. Sounds like they gave you a bum deal. Hopefully they will re-fix it for you without raping you, and then you'll probably want to dump that thing before it does it again, becoming a perfect example of the above.

I don't suppose you happen to have checked the fluid? I'd have to wonder if there's been a leak the whole time since the new tranny was put in.

Yeah I wonder if you leaked out all of your trans fluid and just don't have enough pressure to click the the gears around. Transmissions usually make noise and what not before completely blowing up.

how free is the shift lever? Does it have the same resistance compared to when it was working? It could just be the shift cable is gone.

never mind, read a bit more op and that doesn't fit the broken cable.

It's an auto. When the new one was put in, a hose wasn't fully clamped and I pulled over with white smoke and red (trans) fluid spraying everywhere. However, that got fixed in short order, even the towing was free.

I've been suspecting my CV joints for a while too, I've been getting a sort of grinding/clicking on hard turns (steering wheel cut all the way in either direction).

Also automatics don't use shift cables...

I broke 2 on my Protege5...once in a collision another I don't know how.

unless of course both places lied to me, which would be hard to believe since the second guy is decent. Not sure about the first since it was an insurance company suggested collision place and they didn't even do the work themselves.

Yup, CV joint.

Yes they do.

Have you been checking the transmission fluid levels afterwards to make sure that the hose fix worked? When you check the transmission fluid, make sure it's proper color and look for signs of tiny metal pieces; when my transmission blew out, I had little tiny metal particles in there (almost looked like the transmission fluid was glittering, even though it's color was good at the time).
