Drop HBO/Cinemax/Starz/Encore for a Roku box?

Has anyone done it? The initial costs would be made up in a few months of not having to pay for premium channels anymore but I worry about the quality.

I couldn't do it. Shows like House of Saddam, Entourage, John Adams and all the other countless specials/shows would keep me coming back.

I'm thinking about a Roku box though. It seems too good to pass up.

I already have a PS3 and if Sony would get their collective head out of their ass, I'd be able to use IT to stream Netflix to my TV.

I'd spend another $100 and get one of the HD Netflix enabled BluRay players.

I have a Roku box btw.

Didn't even know they had a BluRay player that would do that. Damnit, I can never keep up with AV.

Have you actually looked at the on demand library for Netflix?

If 70's and 80's TV shows and B-Run movies are your thing then go for it. Otherwise it's absolutely no replacement for HBO or Showtime.

My Tivo Series 3 just had a message pop up the other day about supporting streaming Netflix. How is this different from a "Roku box"? Or Apple TV?

Alphabetized for ya. Some of those are part of the Starz Play, but a lot of the movies available through Starz Play are not in my queue.

It's no replacement, but it's getting considerably better by the day. Doctor Who Season 2 was just added, which got a big thumbs up from me.

Yeah, the reason I maintain my Blockbuster membership is because they don't charge extra to rent Blu-ray (and in-store free rentals makes it better, no wait), and the streaming for Netflex isn't a selling point to me yet. Very few stream in HD, and even then, still 2-channel audio right? A nice bonus but not worthy of getting me to switch.
So a decent selection for streaming, far far less of a selection for HD streaming, doesn't add up to me.

I see the streaming as a really big plus but its not a replacement for those channels. The DVD rentals are though 🙂. I watch way more movies now with Netflix between the DVDs and streaming than I ever did when I had Show and HBO. They rarely ever showed anything I actually wanted to watch other then the series and I can just wait on those to come out on DVD. Dexter and Weeds are both series I started watching thanks to Netflix streaming.
