NSF4: While I agree on better handling in M3 series, M5 has more power 333hp/262 torque in M3, compared to 394hp/368 torque in M5s. So even though the weight difference is 500lbs, M5 should outperform M3 in terms of raw acceleration.
Depends how you measure.
The M3 is lighter and will handle a little better, but the M5 has more raw power. It would be close. In a drag I think the M5 would take it, but if there were curves the M3 would probably outhandle the M5 and win. Both are nice cars though.
The M3 is barely faster than the M5 from 0-90 (driver skill is more of a determinate). After that, the V8 in the M5 really shines. However, I've got about 3100 miles on my M3 and the engine appears to be loosening up more everyday. BMW claims the 0-60 on the M3 is 4.8 seconds. Car and Driver puts that number at 4.7. From my own subjective experience, I'd put that number between 4.5 and 4.8 with a quarter mile time of 13.0 - 13.2.
Here are a couple of photos if anyone is interested: 2001 Carbon Black M3. It truly is an outstanding machine.
