I am posting on the droid x at the store. It is a sick phone

Locked instead of moved to serve as the occasional reminder to people that there's a Gear, Gadgets, and PHONES forum. Of course, you were probably just having trouble navigating to the correct forum with the droid x. 😛 -Admin DrPizza

What makes you think that? Every time they release a new one, it sets new records for number of sales.

That's true. However, monopolies can't last forever in consumer markets and android has made a very big dent into Apple sales. Not to say Apple will not remain popular, but it will not be an overarching success like the iPod before it. The Android swarm, just like the IBM-Compatible swarm before it will soon overtake Apple.

I'm glad to see this because Apple does not provide /4th/5th/etc generation products - they seek to lock you in and milk the money from you. They DO however make great innovations by simplying products and providing a polished UI.

Not much a fan of Android though. Hoping WinMo does well.

Windows Mobile is the absolute worst OS of all the mobile OS's.

Apple > Android >> Blackberry > Palm >>>>> WinMo

Sweet, lets let the fanboy arguments over phone OS's bleed over into OT.

Because I am a worthless human being, I actually identify with and bond with my fucking phone OS.

I completely agree with you but hopefully Win7Mo will change that at least a bit, if not a lot.

I want to love Android but its just not quite as good yet, I have confidence it will be though. I still don't understand how anyone can still use a BB, man those phones are trash.

I just wish someone would enter the mobile market that would make a killer android phone. HTC is the best now but I don't love HTC, and Motorola is shit these days. If only SonyEricsson would make a killer sexy Xperia and sell it in the states using android

The Droid X is the most powerful smartphone on the market right now, bar none. Problem is, its power is crippled by massive boat anchors called eFuse and encrypted boot loader. For the vast majority of people, this doesn't matter. For those of us who want to actually own our devices and hardware, such boat anchors are deal breaking features.

If Moto truly does release all their future devices with those boat anchors, then I won't consider any future Moto phones. HTC, Samsung, SonyEriccson, everyone else, now's your chance to earn my business.

This is much easier for Apple to do since they have the whole vertical integration thing going for them. Apple is one of the few companies that has an army of decent HW and SW guys so they can do it all in-house. Many problems with Android phones could be OS bugs that they can do little besides informing Google about and waiting for a fix.

I do think Android has progressed amazingly fast given the circumstances though.

Motorola is really fucking themselves in the ass with this signed and/or encrypted bootloader and eFuse bullshit. They have the power to completely change the game because the devices they are putting out are quality, but for absolutely moronic unknown business decisions they have decided to cripple their phones for absolutely no reason. The only thing that makes sense is pressure from Verizon.

It really doesn't matter though. The software to fix a 'blown' eFuse will leak from Moto eventually, just like rsdlite did. There is no point in them trying to stop the Android community from modifying their handsets, which is really the most frustrating thing. They have the power completely own this emerging market by offering a high quality handset that allows for full control to the end user. All they have to do is put a warning screen that acknowledges you are voiding your warranty and that covers them completely.

On a side note, and I'm not totally up on laws here so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but locking the bootloader seems like a violation of the GPL. I wonder how all the pissed off UK'ers are going to handle the Milestone issue. If it truly does violate the GPL, I hope they fuck Motorola hard. I will not buy another Moto device because of this horeshit. I despise HTC build quality but I might have to move to that, unless they decide to play the same games.

My absolutely favorite part of this situation is that the Moto PR rep basically said if you want to modify your handset in this fashion to purchase a developer phone like an HTC Nexus One. They actually recommended their competition. Mind = fucking blown. Get your head out of your ass Moto and you could be back on top.
