My incredible is rooted so that I can use Wifi Tether, but I haven't attempted any custom ROMS yet. I guess I'm a bit nervous about it since I don't know a lot about it.

Maybe when this matures a bit more I may try it out.

I have Wifi tether (hotspot) without rooting. I think I'll wait until March for the official update.

I believe PDANet can do it without rooting, but it requires a client app to be installed on the PC?

Easier to root and use Barnacle, Wired Tether, or Wireless Tether IMO.

Well I know about all those things, but he said he had wifi tether without without root. So I am curious to how it is done.

Only USB tethering with PDANet requires the PC app to be installed, and the app provides extra features like SMS passthrough right to the Windows desktop.

If you want to use Bluetooth tethering, you can simply install the phone app and run it, then pair the phone and open a DUN session.

Perhaps he is using Verizon official tethering app (called "3G Mobile Hotspot"). They charge an extra few bucks a month for this but it's fast and reliable.

That's what I'm using but there is a setting that can be changed so that it appears the phone is using the data. I think I've said too much :whiste:

Of course with any tethering app, it is a violation of your customer agreement unless you are specifically paying for that function...so use at your own risk.

Google can be your friend.
#778 android wifi

The main reason I went this route is because I will probably only use the feature 3-4 times per year and didn't want to pay the $20 for it every month.

There's an Evo gingerbread ROM out there too, with almost the same to-do list (plus 4G and HDMI out). I haven't tried it yet, because I just updated to Fresh 3.5 and it's basically perfect.

What does Gingerbread give us over Froyo so far? Any early impressions?
