Driving while sleeping = fail

So, Saturday I fell asleep on the highway driving my fiancee's 05 Pontiac Vibe. She was sleeping in the passengers seat, and we both woke up riding the gravel on the side of the highway. Thankfully it was 5 am, so the highway was empty. We hit a guardrail on the passengers side which threw us back onto the road as I woke up and I couldn't recover control. We went into the median where there was a wire guard, which slowed us down and got us back onto the highway. We drove the two miles to a safe place off the highway, and as we were calming down a police officer happened to drive by. He stopped took the police report, I had AAA come for the car and my parents come to pick us up.

All in all it was a very scary experience. I felt like I was fine to get us home, we were about 4 miles from our exit and I wake up in a bumper car. It seemed very dark out and it took me a moment to get oriented and at that point everything I knew about recovering in a slide was out the window. All I had to offer were expletives as I hit the brake, turned the wheel and stared directly at the barriers we were about to run into. Thankfully no injuries to either of us. Airbags did not deploy but we both had our seatbelts on. Our necks were a little sore that night but it's two days later and we both feel fine with no real pain, so we haven't gone to get anything checked out.

Not sure how the insurance is going to come out, the wire guard pretty much peeled the drivers side front quarter panel like a can. The hood is somewhat buckled and the front bumber is scratched/cracked. The passengers side took a hit from the hard guardrail, but not as bad. Pretty much all of the body needs replacing/work front of the doors, and the rear passengers side took a hit too. The car was still driving and only has 36k on it, so I'm not sure how the insurance is going to shake out. After we got off the highway some plastic on the passenger wheel well started to rub the tire, but otherwise it would be driveable-ish. We grabbed a rental car(no rental coverage) and insurance is supposed to stop and look at it today in front of my parents house before it gets towed to a shop for an estimate.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with a totalled car/ single vehicle accident insurance issues? I'm hoping it will be fairly straightforward but if anyone knows where I need to watch closely I'd like to benefit from your experience.

I'll try to throw up a pic later on today on my next break, but for now lunch is over and its back to work.

**update - Haven't heard back from the insurance company yet, but the garage called and the damage is $11k worth.

I need to get around to calling the tow company, and letting them know how not usefull it is for their driver's first words out of their mouth to essentially tell the obviously upset person how many ways they almost died.

Yea, right now we're looking at coming up with the deductible, and we had to rent a car, and lots of little details, but everytime something comes up I just hug my fiancee and kiss her head and I'm glad that we are both okay. I can't say enough how that is the only important thing.

The driver probably did this because he's towed several vehicles with the same case but no survivors. Although it was the most tactful thing to do I wouldn't bother the tow company over it. Driving to the point where you fall asleep at the wheel is not the most smartest thing to do.

Definitely, several thousand dollars worth of work but it's not totaled. Personally, I would think about fixing it without insurance involved. The deductible and surcharges will probably equal the cost of paying it yourself.

I disagree. Heck, we have a $1000 deductible but the bodywork alone is going to be several times that. As near as I can tell there is no frame damage though. The rear passenger corner looks similar to the front passenger corner, but i was too lazy to paint over our license plate. Maybe later

I definetly think it is fixable, but I just don't know how the bodywork and the few items cut off under the drivers side hood are going to work out to.

He's a tow truck driver, not a psychotherapist. If you want a company that coddles your feelings, expect to pay three times as much.

Good luck with the insurance claim. I assume you have Collision? It should be pretty straightforward, just don't take any crap from them. Unsure whether they'll total it...it depends on whether the damage is surface only, or if stuff underneath got bent.

Yeah, this is why I'm glad I got a twin brother. One day while driving home from college I just get this sudden need to sleep (been only getting about 3 hours a night and yes thats all my fault and yes i know thats stupid). So I simply pulled off the road and told him to please drive. I'm glad I have such an understanding brother and he just took the wheel and let me sleep all the way home. (we're about 30 miles from the college).

glad you are ok. happy you didnt kill anyone. BUT that was a really fucking dumb thing to do.

Personally i feel soemone who falls asleep while driving should be severly punished. lose the right to drive for a few months and have a good fine.

I've had a bad experience in a similar way, but had a lot more wide open space and was able to recover, and vowed to never drive tired again. I will stop and take a break at a rest area or find a place to sleep and continue later.

Consider it stupid tax. :)

I work 3rd shift, and whenever I feel that tired on the way home...I'll pull into a grocery parking lot for a 30 minute nap. Getting home 1/2 hour early is not worth your life. If you feel like you are falling asleep..and your eyes start closing in the middle of the road...YOU ARE FALLING ASLEEP! Pull over damn it! lol

Well, that all depends on what his deductible is (doh, posted too late....still >$1000 worth of damage). Besides, it's entirely likely that the insurance co will find out anyway, thus hiking his rates....so he may as well get what he's paying for.

My friend fell asleep, and hit a parked truck at 45 mph, with his E36 318i vert. He totalled the car, and now the parents are saying yes to buying him an EVO.

EDIT: E36, not E30.

How much does a company who keeps their mouth shut and their opinions to themselves cost?

I had a hit and run to my parked car 6 + years ago. My insurer at the time, Hartford, had a contract with certain area dealerships/car repair shops where taking the car to them to fix resulted in a reduction in the amount of the deductable, IIRC $200 less. So I was able to deal with a dealership I was confident in, purchased a previuous car from them.

Agreed. Sometimes it even takes as little as 10-15 minutes of nap time to get refreshed..

I don't know why it's a hard concept for some people.
