Let's say this situation occurs:

Two cars are at an intersection with a stoplight with unprotected left turns (no left arrow). One car is going north and the other south. Both have their left turn signals on. However, when the light turns green, one of the cars goes straight instead of left. The car which is actually turning left hits the car that went straight.

Whose fault is it?


Reason I ask is because this almost happened to a car right in front of me today. The guy hit the brakes in time.
 
The car actually turning, as far as I know. He doesn't have the right of way, and most driving manuals say the blinkers of other cars alone should not be used as indicators of intention.
 
It is the fault of whoever hit the other car. It's even your fault if somebody in front of you slams on their brakes and you hit them.
 
as stupid as it is, it's the person who DIRECTLY caused the impact, not indirectly like falsly signaling or doing something stupid

Personally I wait an extra half second until I see the guy start turning the way he's supposed to before I start my turn. And if the light is yellow and there is a car coming towards me but looks like he's going to stop, I wait until he has actually stopped before moving.
