Driving pet peeve

You are driving down the highway and all of the sudden everyone in front of you slams on their brakes. A minute later you see why, a cop is on the side of the road and has pullled someone over. The cop is out of the car, talking to the driver of the car he pulled over. Why do people slam on their brakes when they see this? Do they think the cop is going to see them, stop writing a ticket for the guy he already nailed, run to his car, and try and chase them?

People also do this when they see someone pulled over on the reverse direction side of the highway. Like the cop is going to jump the divider and chase them. Annoying. Oh well, just venting.

I think it is an automatic reaction when you see a cop. I've caught myself doing this sometimes but logically you are right, there isn't much he can do if he's on the other side of the highway or out of his car.

I hate it when people turn into the far lane when making a left turn. I saw a cop do it once.

If the cop is out of the car, and giving a ticket to someone else? There is no reason to slow down. He is only going to ignore who he has pulled over if you do something REALLY stupid, like pull a doughnut right beside him, smoking tires and all.

BUT, if he is on the other side, he could just use one of those turn arounds and just as easily come and get YOU.

I hate that turning into the outside lane bit too
on a left turn
because it screws the people trying to turn right :|

worse than people braking for a cop are the rubber necks
that slow right down to look at an accident going the other direction

People who use their turn signals at the last moment are also a joy
Why bother putting them on as you are turning? :disgust:

One thing about bad drivers

They are everywhere (and everyone thinks they are a great driver) ;)

I smell a poll

What about the morons who drive around with one foot covering the brake resulting in a brake on in propulsion characterized by brake lights that are constantly on and a smell of overheated brakes coming from their car. I see this alot here in san francisco. Morons. :disgust:

Ah, the good ol' two-footed driver. I've had some people I know do this for "increased reaction time", but most of them are able to understand that it's stupid because it completely defeats the purpose of brakelights if they are on the brakes the entire time. I've watched more than a few people accelerate away from a stop light with their brakelights on. As for slowing down when one sees police, I generally just let off the gas a little bit. Hitting the brakes only draws attention to your car and if a cop is sitting there and he sees a car nosedive while braking, chances are that he will go after that car. Me, I can never be a cop because I'd be a complete bastard about it, I'd ticket cars for not having front license plates (in states that require them), I'd ticket all the idiots who drive without a driver's side mirror, and I'd definitely ticket the 3-4 people I see each year who have all their brake light bulbs burnt out. (I'm not talking about one or two bulbs, I mean all of them, as in no brakelights at all.)

Same thing happens when you are on the expressway and there is a cop in the shoulder of the OPPOSING lanes and traffic in your direction slows down. :| The newspeople call them "curiousity delays."

2 Things:

1) people who do not use signal lights, or people who leave on signal lights.

2) tailgaters

I don't know about other states... but here in NYC, often cops will PARTNER UP. Meaning.. if one of them is using the speed gun... he will relay information to other cars about speeders.... so if there is one... you can bet there may be another.

And just because he's on the other side of the road doesn't mean he cant or wont radio to someone a bit further up on your side about you.

I HATE TAIL GATERS I do 10+MPH over the speed limit and still get people like this ... hehe I have a 2500 series GMC van.. Im not nervious when people do it. I feel very safe in my 4000+ pounder :)

but why do people do it? are they--> ARSHOLES or just in a hurry all the time

1) its not safe
2) if you were behind at a safe distance you can relax more. and not have to worry about my big ars bumper :)

That's what I do, because it's much easier to just enter the lane you need immediately than to perform a [sometimes risky] lane-change.
People that want to turn right can wait for the green light.
I feel that it's more important to get into the lane you want without having to change lanes (and to possibly slow down other people who have to let you in) than to delay "right-turners" for a few extra seconds.

Hey, at least I admit that I'm not perfect, so don't start flaming me [too much]. :)

In California stoplights, if there is only one lane wanting to turn left, that person can take the left most lane or the right most lane of the street to be turned on. The ppl wanting to turn right on that street have no right of way.

However if there are two or more lanes wanting to turn left, each lane has to stay in their respective lane of the new street.

I know this because I am a person that ALWAYS takes my right of way, and in the first scenario i listed, i was in an accident where my friend took the far lane and someguy trying to turn right went in front of him thinking it was his right of way to turn, but police, insurance, and DMV knew the right of way belonged to my friend turning left.

Well, I can tell you why people slow down why they see a cop who pulled someone over.

First of all, they all have radios and if they see you speeding, all it takes is to dispatch to his friend your license plate.

Secondly, if there is one cop pulling someone over, there is a great chance there are some more cops around doing the same and speeding in this zone will be simply foolish.

Then can dispatch all they want, but a cop cannot determine your speed simply by their unaided eyes...they need speed measurement equipment to be legal. They'd be on the radio all the time because most cars on the freeway are "speeding".
