Driving on the shoulder

I'm starting to see more and more people do this during heavy traffic. They'll ride the shoulder passing as many cars as they can and then cut in at the last minute. What's the typical fine for doing this or do cops even pull people over for doing it? I don't do this nor am I planning to cause IMO this is one of the a-hole-ish thing to do on the road today.

Illegal here and since most roads here have bike lanes before the shoulder that's a big no-no. I've seen cops ticket for this but it is rare. Still, I laugh my ass off at all the idiots pulled over when the cops do nail them for this.

Not legal at all in NJ ... I see the local Wayne PD get cars all the time on RT#23 North before Packanack Lake
That stretch of road, backs up for about 3/4 of mile or so during rush hour due to the traffic signal.

x2, same thing in construction areas for all the losers trying to gain a couple spots and flying down teh lane that ends just to cut in at the last second. You can hit the barrier and destroy your car for all I care.

I don't know what the fine is, but it should be higher. They are potentially blocking emergency vehicles.

The only situation that I think it's ok to be on the shoulder is for a backed up exit ramp when the rest of the traffic is moving normally.

In Oakland on I believe it's 880, there is a sign that says "Okay to drive on shoulder from 4-6PM", and another saying "Shoulder lane must exit"

In NJ, it's 4 points ticket with about $ 200+ fine. But cops are pretty generous about it in the situation GoatMonkey describes. There are at least three spots that cops do not care, I95S exit ramps (The rest of traffic goes to Lincoln Tunnel), I95N exit ramps (The rest goes to GWB), and 3 East (The rest goes to Lincoln Tunnel).

But just like OP, I hate those who go to the shoulder and cut in at the front. (Not for leaving highway) Those A-holes deserve my middle finger, lol.

In Michigan they even made it illegal to wait until the last minute to merge from a lane that's closed. I'm not sure what the fine is though.

I've yet to see a state trooper pull one over yet.

Yes, I don't mind too much when it's done to get to an exit that's up a mile or two, but if somebody is using it to cut back into traffic, bad things should happen to them.

Two things you can count on in Michigan:

1. Road Construction

2. Some A--Hole in the merge lane doing 90 mph trying to get around as many people as he can.

***Oh, and #3 would be....there's never a cop around when #2 is happening.***
