recently built a new game rig so old game rig is my "work" computer
(work=surfing. email. pix. pron etc)

old rig is
Asus p5b
Intel E6300
2gig ram
Geforce 8800gts
reformatted and fresh install of XP home + all asus drivers + XP patches

i always turn the game rig off at nite as its only used in the evening. The work computer
gets used more often. in the am b4 work and concurrently with the game rig.
I always put the work rig to sleep (old one - Dell 8400 - slept no prob)

the p5b wont sleep..the monitor shuts off. and i am guessing the HD shuts off. but the fans can still be heard running. cant figure out why.

stock windows firewall behind Linksys W54g router. nothing special otherwise running. Firefox latest version. Thunderbird. thats about it. Tried looking in the BIOS but dont see anything obvious.
(ps i also have the add ons for firefox - no script and adblock plus ..installed)

so i turn to the experts here. any suggestions on what to look for?

If you set the sleep correctly, then it is the hardware.

It is rather common that old hardware and Win XP will not go to deep Sleep.

I have the same problem with retail Windows 7. The earlier builds with the same hardware slept just fine, now it's the same issue as yours. No idea why.

but the "old" rig is only 3 years old. The older 5.5yr Dell Dimension 8400 (P4 3.0) with the same XPhome sp3 would go to sleep just fine. like i said, its driving me nuts

i have a p5b delux and it goes to sleep ok - the 1st time. after a resume then it won't. the monitor goes off and it seems to be shutting down permanently. i'm using win7 rc on that pc though so am assuming it's that. other pc (also had issues with sleep with the RC) works fine with a retail.

The whole thing is one big mess. It is like WIFI, every one does what they please and use terminology geared toward marketing.

Hibernation works because straight Hibernation means that the OS saves the contnet of the RAM to a file, and then the computer goes Off (totally Off).

When the computer is switched ON it goes through regular Boot (i.e it takes time to come back), and then loads the RAM info file back to RAM. So the Desktop with its Windows, and open applications come back the way it was upon going into Hibernation.

My computers with Win 7 that are running on one or two years old Mobos go to sleep fully. I have one XP that goes to full sleep on a VIA C-7 mobo.

Every thing else on the rest of my systems is a "random" mix.

If you have wireless kb/mouse, that may also keep your computer from sleeping correctly. Everytime they communicate w/ the computer, it wakes the computer up. My win7 did not sleep correctly til I disabled wake by kb/mouse.

Go to device manager and right click on mouse/kb. Then in one of the tabs, uncheck 'allow device to wake computer'.

Just a few things to try... make sure the sleep is set to S3 in BIOS. And in device manager in windows go through everything and make sure it doesn't have "Allow this device to wake the computer" checked. Typical culprits are network adapters, mice/keyboards, but sometimes other items might have this setting too.

went thru everything as suggested. in the BIOS power menu
prior i went thru this menu and it was set to

suspend mode (auto)
2 choices S1 only and auto. when i first checked it was auto. this morning i looked at it and it somehow was changed to S1 only..changed it back to auto

repost video on S3 Resume (disabled)
choices enabled or disabled. at first it was enabled. changed it to disabled. this morning i changed it back to enabled

ACPI 2.0 support (disabled)
this was disabled and i enabled it this morning.

ACPI APIC Support (enabled)
default..left it that way

keyboard/mouse off in device manager
Wake on Lan is off

one thing of note that may be related..when i was using the dell i could wake it from standby with mouse or keyboard..both were PS/2...i got a new keyboard..USB ..and since then i had to use the power button to wake. keyboard/mouse did nothing.

I am using same USB keyboard and ps/2 Logitech trackman trackball (tho have a USB trackman on order)

desktop power options properties
never
advanced tab. was..... "when i press the power button on my computer"
goes to standby. tried setting it to ..do nothing.. did not help.

from searching the web it seems to be a common problem. some saying it has something to do with XP SP3 ..but the ancient p4 3.0 Dell 8400 went to sleep fine.

hmm havent sold that Dell computer yet. i may check bios and other settings to see if i can see anything different.

after changing everything. tried standby as i headed for work. no change. everything shuts off except fans still spinning.

thanks for the replies everyone :)

This is likely your problem. Drivers from the motherboard manufacturer are almost guaranteed to be out-dated. ASUS probably hasn't update the drivers for this board since it was released. Also, check for a newer BIOS.
