Driving Manual

I got a job as for Vallet Parking over the summer. I know how to drive manual gear in theory, but I haven't actually done it before. What if I'm in third gear, and I break. Can I switch directly into first skipping second gear? Do I have to gear down and then break, or break and gear down? And what about keeping the car in neutral, when should I do that? Are these gears labeled? Explain to me the tid bits... I know how to clutch, let go of gas, and gear up/down... someone tell me what i don't know.

When your moving the car in third gear and need to stop, just hit the break and put the clutch in. You don't have to go to any specific gear sequentially, when your ready to move again just stick it in first and go.

Why would you be in third gear in a parking lot?

There was a long thread about this a day or two ago.

you can shift into any gear you'd like at any speed - just make sure it's within the engine's limits 🙂 If I'm slowing down and I'm in say, 4th gear, I clutch - downshift to first, and keep the clutch in until I come to a stop. Going around a corner, same deal, I downshift 2 second, and let off the clutch when I'm coming out of the turn.

Budda, this is when I'm around 700-800RPMs in 4th (city driving...say, coming to a stop sign), so I'm doing about 20MPH. And if I happen to be going faster I kick it down to 2nd before I hit 1st... It's not like I come down an offramp doing 50 then kick it into 1st as I slow down 🙂 I normally go into neutral for that or ride the gear out.

i've never driven manual...been thinking bout it tho...is it easy to pick up?
how much pressure do you need for the clutch?...is it as sensitive as the break and gas?

<< how much pressure do you need for the clutch?...is it as sensitive as the break and gas? >>

Varies from car to car

third to neutral, then can go to any gear as long as it is within revving range.. I go to neurtal, stop, then first.. Or if then car is still rolling, then second... give a little gas and release the clutch slooow...
Push clutch in fast, release slower.. (as u give gas)..
Practice makes it perfect, each car is different. Bimmers engage very low..

Actually, if you're in third and need to make a turn (without stopping) put it in second gear and let out the clutch, this will slow you down without using so much of the break.

🙂

I know how to drive stick. I'm 15, and have my permit. (just learned 2 days ago)

It's pretty simple, just be sure to not kill it when letting the clutch out and giving it gas.

also, when shifting from gear to gear, please make sure to let out the gas as you switch gears, and only give it more gas after you've fully lifted up the clutch.

Note to self: stay away from any and all parking valets this summer.

Bingo. I never let people drive my cars, no matter if it's got an automatic or not. I'm not a very trusting person.

Uhh, no you don't or you wouldn't be asking these questions. Mabye try to find a friend with an old beater car with a stick shift. Then ask your friend if you can learn on his car.

Practice is the only way to get better, and it can take a while before you get even remotely good at starting from a dead stop.

dont ever downshift in someone elses car. And wtf are you doing in 3rd gear in a parking lot? 3rd gear is like 60-100mph on my car.

grrrrr....
