Driving a car off the dealer's lot-> insurance question

JEDI

Lifer
Let's say it's Sun and my insurance agent (nationwide) is not working. if i want to drive that car off the dealer's lot, am i covered by the Dealer's insurance?

Are you test driving or buying? If you are test driving the dealers insurance will cover you. If you are buying you need to check with your insurance company. Some of them will cover you automatically ( mine does - USAA) some won't. Call them (insurance co.) and ask.

I have always been asked to show a driver's licence, but I have never been asked to show proof of insurance when test driving a car. I would assume they have such insurance, but if it's a burning question, call a dealer, and ask.

You should be covered, you should have a short period of time to alert them to any vehicles added to your coverage.

Ask. If you are covered under their insurance, feel free to blow the engine and do some break stands and maybe run over some dogs 😉

Dogs?

Why not make the most of your time & hit some old women?

lol, you might want to ask how much their insurance will pay before doing that 😉 haha. Can you imagine asking to test drive a vehicle, then asking how much insurance is on it? They would start freaking out.

In my experience, most dealers can offer short term insurance for a couple of days to cover you until you can contact your insurance agent. The dealer can't let you drive off in the car until you have financed it, the financing company is not going to finance it until you provide proof of full insurance coverage and the dealer doesn't want to lose a sale due to a lack of insurance. Hence, they sell short term, high price insurance.

when we bought the BMW they wanted to see our existing insurance.. we showed it and they continued the transaction.

I know you are covered by the ins. company for a perod of time.. after which you can officially add the new one in.

It varies from state to state and insurance company to insurance company. Generally if you trade in an insured car the new car is covered but you must notify your agent in 5-30 days.
