i swapped my floppy drive for a working one, and when i re-booted, my cdrw and dvd drives were gone. it says these devices are not working as windows was unable to load the drives (error code 31). i have reb-booted, disabled/enabled, re-installed twice, booted with them drives not plugged in, everything i can think of! any ideas? there are no loose connections, and nothing has been changed, i have no idea what the problem is, any advice is much appreciated...

Double check the floppy drive's cable for proper orientation (red stripe on pin 1, board & drive).

sharkmeat...
move the little mouse thingee over to "here" and then click the left button - or if you need to, ask a grown up for help...

So here is your help!!!.:)

Well here is what you do unplug the floppy cable and turn it around and,also the four little hot wires that plugs into the floppy make sure they are also pluged in correctly.Floppy,s are not like HD and Rom,s where the red wire faces the hot wires,they can be reverse of each other.Depends on who made the floppy drives good luck.
PS Go into Bios and change your boot sequence to CD drive and C\. then floppy to see if it will find the CD Drive on boot up (place a bootable cd in the rom) if the above didn't work.

LOL I see that gramer fixed your computer.When you can understand a post enough to correct the problem it can't be to bad.I hope people are not here to teach gramer.I don't have time for the crap what you see is what you get.BTW can I be dumb in gramer as some are dumb in computer repairing.Ever one has a diff type of skill,and gramer is not mine as you can read,so get off the subject.Or don't read my post simple as that.I will not take it personel.I will try and help anyone that has a problem;AMD or Intel makes no diff,s to me.

okay, i am trying their solution, but it is worded poorly:

i got steps 1 and 2, but then look where it says note...it says you must "change four keys that begin with the following:" and then it lists the 4 keys, but it does not say how you should change them, what am i missing here?

http://www.adaptec.com/support/downloads/fix_uninst_ecdc_w2k.reg
You must also make the following changes to the registry fix from Adaptec's Web site before you import it to the registry:

1 - Change all instances of ControlSet001 to CurrentControlSet as in the example listed below.

2 - Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values from the first registry key in the registry fix.

NOTE: Before you merge this registry fix, you must change four keys that begin with the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
