Drives asked to be formatted

One of my computers started to crash about 2 weeks ago so I decided to reformat, I will call that computer #1 k? So #1 stopped running well since there were missing files and registry entries and all that stuff, so I renamed windows to winn and Program files to progra and documents and settings to docu. I then put in the windows XP CD in and started to install windows agian but it failed. So I then decided to back it up to Computer #2 which was running fine. I took the drive from #1 and installed it into #2 as a slave drive. PC #2 has 2 drives in it already so I just removed the CD Rom cables and attached it to the drive. I copied files from Drive 1 in PC #1 to Drive 2 in PC #2. Copied some files then the computer all of a sudden crashed. Started up the computer and now it wont boot!I tried to troubleshoot every possible way.

"Convienently" I had to go to my cousin's house for memorial day just because. While I went to fry's my Aunt gave me $190 for unknown reasons so I arrive buy some stuff and realize I could use another big drive, so I ask the Clerk for their cheapest Maxtor drive and luckily they had 120GIG drives selling for $60! Unfortunately since I'm a complete moron I only bought 1 Drive, Later realize the drives are $130 when not on sale so gave up trying to buy another for cousin when I came back agian because I forgot to get a drive.

So I come home installed the drive in machine because now Drive 1 in PC #1 isnt being detected either because I forgot to rename back windows folders and all that stuff. Installed the drive, installed XP and now all the drives but the 120GIG drive WILL not be detected in windows or the bios. BTW I was working on all of this from PC #1 which has an Intel 440BX mobo, I didnt want to do this from PC #2 because I planned on using this drive in PC #1. So I try everything to get these drives detected but nothing would. So a week later I buy an ABIT IC7-G Mobo because I planned on upgrading the computer but just didnt know when I should, got the processor and everything ran smoothly.

Since I had just installed windows freshly on the 120GIG drive I just deleted the windows folders and so On. Reinstalled Windows but this time windows 2000 because I couldnt find the XP CD. I agian try installing the drives one at a time and luckily they were detected! Unfortunately the two drives from PC #2 where asked if they wanted to be formatted or not. This time I DIDNT formatted the drives because it could possibly destroy the data on there. So my question is WHY ARE THE DRIVES ALL OF A SUDDEN BEING ASKED TO BE FORMATTED!? The Drive from PC #1 didnt though so I backed it up to the 120GIG drive. But why the TWO drives from PC#2? The system was a Dimension 8200 with the Intel 850E chipset.

Sorry, I could have sworn I used separated paragraphs. Yea so now that I have been trying to recover files, some have become corrupt. So my two questions are Why did this happen with PC #2 and why are they becoming corrupt? What programs can detect and fix corrupt files. Thanks!
