Drivers

Lets say you need AC97 drivers for your ASUS (AMD 64) motherboard and Gigabyte (Intel P4) motherboard.

Would you get the drivers from ASUS/Gigabyte (Manufacturer Website), Intel/VIA (Chipset Manufacturer) or from Realtek?

The thing about Realtek is that they don't have Chipset specific drivers, i'm assuming its just all the chipsets combined into one driver but how does that affect ASUS, Gigagbyte specific traits?

While you could go with VIA/Intel or ASUS/Gigabyte - You take the risk of installing outdated drivers.

I'm just using AC97 as an example, so lets take other devices into consideration aswell.

I always go to the component manufacturer first, then Intel or AMD, then VIA or Realtek. It sometimes seems that there is some tweak that the manufacturer puts in drivers to make them work with their hardware.

However, this did not work well with my Epox, AMD 64, and XP 64 bit. I was all over the net trying to get everything working.
