I just remembered my first video upload on Youtube and I thought it is interesting enough to share it in this forum:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZrssT-Kpdw

This is a segment of a kart race that takes place every year since 2009 in the city center of Patras, Greece. It was the first time the race took place and the chicanes in the two long straights of the circuit caused many accidents. The interesting thing is that some drivers ignored the yellow flags and that caused consecutive crashes!

Since the second time of the race the chicanes were removed and that improved the race quality of the circuit a lot. Actually world class participants have raced in P.I.C.K., like world champions Jonathan Thonon and Davide Forè.

edit: I added English subtitles to the video. You can activate them by clicking CC and read the interesting dialogs...

Race drivers ignoring yellow flags?! Say it isn't so! ;)

Seriously though, should have been a debris flag (yellow and red striped) not a caution flag.

Generally looked like they weren't doing race speed through there.

Should've also been at least double waved yellows, and red-yellow slippery track, and red-yellow obstacle, with crews on track.

In F1 that would have been a safety car.

None of them went too fast for just a single yellow though.

It was a one time incident... It happened the first time the P.I.C.K. race was organized.

If you watch carefully on 2:22 there is a man on the left who holds a sign. That's a red and yellow striped sign. I can't recall if it was out since the start of the video though.

But it isn't the first time when race drivers ignore a yellow flag. It has happened again in higher classes of auto racing like Formula 1. For example ==> http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2011/10/12700.html

I talked about the red and yellow stripped sign in my previous post. It appears at 2:22. As I said I can't remember if it was out since the beginning of the video.

You are right! They aren't driving at full race speed, but some of them are driving fast enough to cause more accidents. You can see at least one kart that moves at much lower speeds that the others under yellow.

You can hear a crash on 0:15, then hear a second one on 1:42 (and see the aftermath of it at 1:56), you can hear the impact of a crash on 2:34 and you can see a kart continuing its course after a crash on 3:54.

There aren't any double yellow flags out, but there is a yellow flag at the turn before the chicane. (I don't know if it is visible in the video.) And you can see many marshals agonizingly waving there hands! In my opinion some drivers should have slowed down more than they did.

I guess the 'rolling eyes' smiley didn't get my sarcasm across.

Every race I've driven in has had drivers ignore or miss yellow flags on a semi-regular basis. I've also seen corner works forget to or just not throw a flag when they REALLY needed to.

I'm not at all surprised that race drivers break the rules some times.

You are right. It isn't the first time someone brakes the rules during a race. (Although ignoring yellow flags on purpose it is a very serious offense).

But in my video in the first 2 and a half minutes there are consecutive crashes despite the yellow flags, the red and yellow stripped sign and the marshals waving their hands.

Personally I haven't seen this again. In my opinion organizers should have pulled the red flag out or the black flag for those who didn't comply with their orders. It is somewhat odd to let a "chaotic" situation going on for 2 and a half minutes...

like my thio vangeli said, "there's only 1 thing wrong with the greek festival - too many damn greeks."

seriously though, i expected the camera to spend at least half of the time focused on women.

It's Greece so there are Greeks everywhere not only at festivals! :)

In my opinion the camera was focused on the right place. No reason to miss the action while so many things were going on!

I added English subtitles to the video. I think that the dialogs are interesting enough and they worth the time to watch it with the subtitles turned on. Just click CC... and enjoy the video!
