I know Kevin from when I was a kid, we grew up on same block in Long Island along with his sisters Maureen and Kerry.

Glad he and his wife pulled through this horrific wreck.

Rock Photographer Kevin Mazur, On Texting While Driving

Mazur, who has spent his career photographing everyone from Bono to Prince and Kurt Cobain, is also co-founder of the ubiquitous Wire Image. So naturally he included photographs: the first shows the two cars after the accident. The second is him and his wife holding hands on their hospital beds.

Mazur sent out the following letter to a lengthy list of his trendy friends (Tommy and Andy Hilfiger, Carson Kressly). In it he describes the police report he just received that said the driver who hit him was not only intoxicated but texting to boot.

Here’s Mazur’s letter, which even includes a link to a handy mobile app for people who just can’t ignore the bleep of an incoming email:

Subject: We are Lucky to be Alive -Texting Kills

You all know that my wife + I were in a horrible head on car crash and we are very lucky to be alive.

We just received the police report that disclosed that the 22 year old driver who hit us was INTOXICATED above the legal limit and was TEXTING.

You may be tempted to attribute the accident to the drivers drunken state, but in actuality, because of her texting we were at a 4x greater risk of having that accident than if she were only intoxicated.

I wanted to share this with you in hopes that it will save someone from going through what my wife and I have endured. My plea is to PLEASE stop TEXTING while you drive. We are all so busy, and it is so easy to forget or ignore that picking up your phone when you’re behind the wheel could put peoples lives in danger. Please consider if any text message is worth your life, or the life of someone else.

My son watched an episode of Oprah on the dangers of texting and driving while in Drivers Ed. He would constantly tell me to stop texting while we were in the car and he often referred to the Oprah Show. I dismissed his requests thinking it wouldn’t happen to me. After the accident I reflected on what my son had always been preaching and decided to watch the show. I’ve attached the link below and hope you will take the time to WATCH IT and SHARE IT with your family to educate everyone on this horrible habit that most of us are guilty of. I was the biggest offender before my accident.

DON’T TEMPT FATE,
THAT TEXT CAN WAIT

So he had to almost lose his life to listen to a bit of sound advice from his own son, and stop texting himself?

...and I bet the drunk driving part had nothing to do with it 🙄

I love ppl who twist things to their causes.

(anxiously awaiting the burn in hell flames to come.)
