Ok ICMAN, step back and look at this from a different perspective ...

I want to believe that the problems are all ATI's fault as much as you do, but maybe, just maybe it is a combination of things that are specific to CMR2, and none of your other games.

Are you using any other hardware specifically for CMR2 that you aren't using for any other game? What hardware are you using to play CMR2 (I suspect a gamepad/joystick/wheel that you wouldn't use on anything other than a racing sim)? There is a strong possibility that it is either this hardware or the combination of this hardware + Radeon that is the cause of the lockups, and that it won't happen with other games since you don't use that hardware for anything else. If this is the case, verify that the controller does not share the same IRQ as the video card (or maybe even the sound card?). At the very least, disable the controller and try just the keyboard and/or mouse (this will suck, but if the game doesn't crash, then it isn't the Radeon). If it crashes, then you have eliminated another potential cause, and will have more of an argument that it is ATI's fault.

If you aren't using any additional hardware, disable sound, lower graphics settings, upgrade DirectX, close background apps, etc, and eliminate all other possibilities.

HTH, and I am really sorry that you are having these problems.

Sure, either.

But yes, specifically I meant the "rolling lines" problem.

Did you know there is a new patch out for this game?

Colin McRae Rally 3.0

Description: This PC upgrade fixes some of the known issues with the final release of the game. A full fix list is included in the readme. Some force feedback problems and known crashes have now been resolved.

It is funny that you waste your time looking for problems related to the narrow field you are familiar with and even funnier since you surely cannot have access to restricted design information. The product is clearly not defective and neither is your part according to your own software testing so a replacement is not warranted. So ask ATI (or Gigabyte) and Codemasters for help as they must have heard from thousands of other customers already and may have configuration suggestions if any problem has not already been solved with newer drivers or game patches. I played CMR2 on my 8500, but I preferred Rally Masters. And as said, CMR3 is out, but again I prefer Rallisport Challenge. Codemasters are good, but DICE just makes a better rally game I think.

Did you try running it in Win95 or 98 compatability mode? Create a shortcut to the game on your desktop, then right-click the shortcut, click on the Compatability tab (IIRC), and select W95 or 98 from the drop-down menu,

I can't agree more!!!!
every single driver release, the old problems are fixed, but MORE PROBLEMS COME OUT! CAN'T THEY EVER DO ANYTHING RIGHT?!?!??!

Every other one of my games crash... some games work perfectly fine... some crashes

RTCW crashes in catalyst 3.2 and 3.5,
the control panel doesn't work for me at all in catalyst 3.4, even tried the omegas, reinstalled twice
this hdribl demo always crashes on catalyst 3.4 and 3.6
dawn demo with ogl wrapper crashes on catalyst 3.6
vice city crashes on catalyst 3.4
command conquer generals crashes on cat 3.2, and 3.4
TOCA Race Driver crashes on cat 3.5
all 3d programs freeze for a few seconds after i exit in catalyst 3.6, except quake 3, that will freeze forever!!!

ati drivers are nothing but headaches... yes i've done clean installs of windows,
i even put the card in another system... same problem...

this card does run several games flawlessly
unreal tournament 2003
postal 2
rallisport challenge
tactical ops
midnight club 2
colin mcrae 3
motogp2

lesson learned... never buying another ati card...

Software issues are commonplace with the games themselves. It pays to do a bit of research before buying anything. It would be nice if they just all worked but c'est la vie. It seems you have already spent more time than necessary. Did Codemasters reply and say they would not help because of the game's age? IC's may be ubiquitous but it is a very specialized thing -it just struck me as queer that you might have assumed that was the problem before testing other games rather than focussing on the the most likely answer, namely software.

ABOUT THE ROLLING LINES PROBLEM.....

I saw this fix somewhere, in this forum most likely and it worked like a charm for me. If your card has both a VGA and DVI connector and you are using a CRT monitor, plug the monitor into the DVI port via the DVI/VGA adapter INSTEAD of using the VGA port. Voila, no more scrolling lines.

Tried it and it did not help. There is some kind of incompatibility with some monitors and Ati cards, when I set refresh rate to 85 on Radeon; in the monitor menu it shows the refresh rate as 84! When I revert to Nvidia card and set refresh rate to 85, it also shows 85 in monitor menu. The problem lies in refresh rates, IMO (Not PSU or EMI)

Monitor is Viewsonic PF790 with W2K whql drivers installed

Hmm ATI... I have concerns too ;)

My Sapphire Radeon 8500LE performed like a champ on my ABIT KT7A with Windows ME (very impressed indeed and installed flawlessly)

The same card in my ECS K7S5A installed perfectly but would not run in 3D games - OpenGL just produced a lower third of the screen which was unrecogniseable, D3D games would run for 5 mins perhaps then the colours would warp and the screen would turn purple or blue (very very weird!!!)

Replacing the 8500LE with a Radeon 9000Pro in the ECS board was perfect - no problems whatsoever!

I tried all the usual suspects PSU, ATI drivers, Omega drivers, BIOS updates etc. ad nauseum......nothing worked!

If you have a problem with an ATI card my advice is to return it for a replacement ASAP. (I'm currently running a GF4 Ti4200 in the ECS board and no problems observed.)

There appears to be certain configurations that ATI cards do not like - and no matter what you do nothing will change that.

8500 - 9600p - 9700p - 9800p - and i have had ZERO driver issues. I think the "issues" are with the dumb fuc*s who install the cards/drivers wrong. :)

Anyone else notice that these forums are going to hell?

I installed a 9100 on a GF2 setup, driver installation was flawless, and it's run everything I've thrown at it.

I say ATI drivers are fine.
