While I don't disagree with your comment, this list isn't the 10 safest and 10 least-safe automobiles; it's the autos with the lowest and highest death rates. Many think that those would be one and the same, but they are not. The kinds of people who drive the auto often makes more of a difference than the auto's level of safety itself.

The auto-insurance industry deals with the same thing: a vehicle's risk is not only from its level of safety but also from the group of people who typically drives it. That's why a Smart car or Mini Cooper would be less-expensive to insure than a Mustang, Ranger, Grand Am, etc. Are the former safer vehicles than the latter? No. Is the former driven by an older, more-responsible group of people? Definitely.

Yup, the Corvette historically had the highest rollover fatality rate, while London's double decker buses had 0. The physics says "WTF?", but the psychology says "no shit".

A lot of those cars on the list are the cheaper cars that try to market themselves as cheaper sports cars (Eclipse, Sunfire) or cars that they think are faster than they really are (Neon, Cavalier).

In my experience, the most common new/young driver cars ^^

We don't have many 2wd vehicles up here, but I could easily see that in other parts of the country.

Wouldn't most cars driven be 2wd?

Sorry - should've specified trucks/SUV's. Basically anything above that has to specify that it's a 2WD model will be uncommon here.

:( I can see that happening. it's too easy to lose control in a stang if you're young, but once you get the feel, they're fun to toss around.

I was half-expecting to see the Camaro on the list, but apparently not.

Honda Pilot SUV "midsize" should at least be called "large" if not "fat pig." seriously there is nothing medium about them, except maybe length. They are huge and bulbous and ugly.

report isn't really that accurate since you will have a higher percentage of sunfires and neons on the road compared to audis and mercedes

Similar car/hardware, but different use (luxury GT v. asian performance beast compared to other asian cars).

I LOLed.

fixed

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car and I would not be ashamed of driving one by any means, esp the 370. It's just not one I would describe using the word "beast".

wow, the Chevy Astro really surprises me. Other than that, I look at the top list, and the bottom list, and the thought that comes to mind is this....think less about the car, and more about who is driving it

It's not too surprising. The 'safe' list full of family haulers. The person that chooses a minivan probably is driving less agressively than someone in a mustang or 350Z.

Does anyone remember that debate that went on in the airbag thread? One person that will remain unnamed was convinced that car size didn't have nearly as much to do with safety as everyone claimed.

Death rates by vehicle size and weight: Characteristics that influence vehicles? death rates include type and body style (2-door car, 4-door SUV, etc.). Another important factor is size. The smallest vehicles in any type/body style group generally have the highest rates. None of the 15 vehicles with the lowest driver death rates is a small model. In contrast, 11 of the 16 vehicles with the highest death rates are mini or small models, and none is large or very large.

lol. But yeah, I think that's better one.

When I typed "beast," even I was like "hmm.. really?" But I typed it anyway, since it's still beast enough compare to most other "normal" cars. :p Thanks for fixing though! Kiki.

I guess that's why they normalized the results based on the number registered.

I am talking specifically G35 and 350Z which are not too different in terms of characteristics. Maybe the ones on 350Z are just younger and more aggressive.

You will have to dig much much further into the details to get get anything worthwhile - this report is nearly worthless as it is written.

Why?

Well, compare nearly identical cars, and you'll differences of 100% between death rates. A perfect example:

Ford Crown Victoria 2003-04 248,411 45
Mercury Grand Marquis 2003-04 299,046 75

These vehicles are the same car, sold in roughly the same amounts, yet one has twice the death rate as the other.

Mazda Tribute 2001-04 226,895 44
Ford Escape 2001-04 741,369 65

Again... 50% difference, same vehicle.

Ford F-150 2004 130,026 40
Ford F-150 Heritage 2001-04 1,789,282 119

Definitely do not draw any conclusions from this study. It's pretty near worthless.

I don't think the study is worthless. In the engineering sense it's not meaningful. But in the demographics sense, it is. Remember how the most/least ticketed car study showed the same thing. Differently badged cars made both lists.

Purely driver-related, I'm sure. The 350Z is a tank, but crash enough of them and you're gonna get some dead folks.

I think this study tells you more about the drivers than it does about the cars.

I can testify favorably for the Audi A4. I almost totaled mine at 65MPH into a barrier and did not receive a scratch.
