Drive woes

Gey guys, just got an HP cd-rw from a friend, so, I hook it up below my samsung DVD drive, make sure all connections are firmly in place, such as the power connectors, and the IDE cables. Everything is connected, and both drives have power. When I get into windows neither drive is recognized 🙁 Does anyone know what's happening here? My mobo is the ASUS A7N8X-X if that's of any help to you.

pins on the back of the drive
either the settings are wrong, or the drives are just being picky.
i've found setting the drives as master and slave often, doesn't work, and that using cable select works. and i've also found exactly vice versa.

check out the jumpers. 1 master, 1 slave on 1 IDE ribbon. the master should be the last device on the IDE cable.

No ideas what-so-ever? I tried what you said craig, still only ONE drive gets recognized, and that's only when one is plugged in at a time. Right now the DVD rom drive is being recignized, but the CD-RW has power, but remains unrecognized by the BIOS or windows.

Hi Sneakystuff

Try this

Make the drive at the END of the IDE ribbon the MASTER drive
Make the drive in the MIDDLE of the IDE ribbon the SLAVE drive.

To assign master and slave status, use jumpers on the pins at the back of the drive.
Which pin makes the drive master/slave is given on the drive itself......
