Yes I agree on the Barracuda drive, but my question is will the HDs ever be louder than the 5 panaflo fans that are blowing in my case already? I mean my computer still sounds pretty loud, but I can't tell if it is the HD or the air passing through the fans.

depends on your panaflos....you have alot of them so yeah that will increase noise level even if they are the L1As

but from what i've noticed...i've powered on a system without a cpu installed before and i took out all my case fans and the loudest thing on there had to be the PSU fans...i'm afraid to mod those though cuz one slight mistake and you could uh basically kill yourself

I moded the fan in my PS and it is not as dangerous as you may think. You just have to let the PS discharge, keep yourself grounded, and create a static free environment (ie not sitting down on your carpet). All of my fans are L1a's btw.

BARRACUDA!!!
short of buying a whole new drive, i would try wrapping the interior of your case in dynamat. not sure how that does for heat though, anyone have any experience?
otherwise, just have your roommate constantly play some sweet ass licks or hit some bongo (did i want to say that? yeah, that makes sense).

I did a large portion of my case in dynamat like stuff. It was generic sound deadening stuff for 1/4 the price. I think I got it from www.partsexpress.com, IIRC. I didn't really notice much of a difference in the sound. I would think that some thin carpet would be more effective in stopping the higher pitches than dynamat which only really helps quell vibration.

That's a good point. I never thought of simply putting something under the case to deaden the noise a bit. Perhaps some cardboard or something.

<< These are programs that silence your disk by adjusting the way they work ! >>

Those acoustic management utilities only affect the drive's seek noise -- i.e. the noise made when your disk is being accessed. They do not help the idle noise. Idle noise may technically be "quieter" than seek noise, but it's usually higher frequency and more "whiney" -- and thus much more annoying than seek noise. Therefore, those utilities are pretty much useless IMHO.

For a quiet hard drive, the ideal solution is a Seagate Barrucuda IV...

I've actually started using the power saving component of windows to turn off my drives when I go to sleep. I have a 7200 rpm scsi drive that I only use for burning cds and such. It's a whiner that I can live without most of the time, so I set the drives to turn off after 20 minutes. I wish I could have different intervals of time for each drive. I'd rather have the scsi drive turn off after 5 minutes and my other drives turn off after 30 minutes. I don't think this is possible, but I'm hoping someone here knows something about this that I don't. :)
