I recently upgraded my PIII450 to an Athlon 900 & MSI K7TPro2A m/board.

I have clean-installed Win98SE (after having probs with WinME) am now having drive-letter assignment probs - I can only assign drive letters from A: to F:

This is the current configuration:

C: IBM HDD
D: Quantum HDD
E: Yamaha SCSI 4416 CD-RW
F: Iomega ZIP 100

I have a Creative DVD drive which cannot be assigned a drive letter because Win98 won't let me choose a G:

I have installed the VIA 4in1 4.26 drivers, with no change.

Any ideas?

Clean install eh? Sounds awfully strange. Is it possible that you've installed a program after the clean install that added a "LASTDRIVE=" line in your config.sys?

I clean-installed Win98SE and noticed that I had no DVD drive before I installed the 4in1 drivers.

Then I went to set the DVD to E:, the CD-RW to F: and the ZIP100 to G: (as I normally do). But Win98 only gives me the E: and F: options in the drop-down menu.

Thought the 4in1 drivers would fix this - but no. There is no LASTDRIVE line in my config.sys. Weird prob.

How are your drives set jumper-wise, nothing is set to cable select right?

That's a really new motherboard, but are there any BIOS upgrades that could address it?

I just added LASTDRIVE=Z to my config.sys and it seems to have solved the problem - thanks!!! :0)

It still is weird though - Win98 should list all the drive letters after a clean install...

Merry Christmas!
