Drive doesn't recognize DVD

My Sony DVD+/-RW drive isn't recognizing a movie DVD I've inserted. I'm sure this is old stuff, but can anyone recommend a site that would explain what's going on and, perhaps, a way around it?

Does the dvd play in another drive or stand alone dvd player? If so, then it's the drive and if not then the disc is bad. My 4yr old sony dvd burner can't read any dvds anymore but can still burn them fine.
