so ive been watching the movie "sideways" the past few weeks and it has drawn me into wine drinking. yes i know thats a pretty stupid reason to start drinking wine but i have done so in the past at resteraunts and enjoyed it. not to mention ive got an erratic sleeping pattern and a drink of wine always puts me to sleep. my question is, how do i start? i was trying to look into online guides for n00bs such as myself but couldnt find anything decent. all ive been lookin at are some blog sites and "wine of the week" type stuff.

also why in the movie does the main character 'miles' hate merlot so much?

Please do not be that guy.

What I have been doing is concentrating on region or type of wine and sampling various wines of those areas and types. It seems to help from getting too overwhelmed by all the different wines available.

Wine thread. She's stomping grapes. Besides, her elbows are pointy.
She has covered her shame.

Anyway, if you drink you might wake up dead with a pair of pointy, bloody elbows embedded in your thighs. You shouldn't drink.

I don't drink any more.

Or any less.

I don't know much about wine. Whenever I buy, I get it from local vintners. The mid Atlantic region has pretty good wines, and we're starting to approach CA with the quality of some of the blends. Anyway, I don't have the inclination to learn wine, so I might as well support the hometown boys. I'd suggest the same for you. CA and France get enough recognition and money. You probably have someone close that could use some lovin'.

I've always been a fan of Riesling. Wine, esp reds, give me heartburn like no body's business though :'(

If you have the opportunity, my recommendation is to go on a wine tasting tour. That let's you try a lot of varieties and you can find out what you like =) If not, just get a few reds and a few whites and see what you like that way.

Find a wine bar in the city you live in and ask a girl out on a date.
You each order a flight of drinks a talk about what you like and dislike about each wine.
Try some Pinot Noir.

I don't really care much for wine. Never developed much of a taste for the stuff.

I don't care much for most of the reds. For me, most white wine is easier to drink.

From my house, I can drive to at least 50 wineries within a couple of hours. (hell, 2-1/2 hours will put me in Napa.)

Surprisingly, even though Modesto is the home of Gallo wines, they don't have a tasting room here anywhere...but IIRC,, they do at one of their wineries in either Napa or Sonoma.

The Franzia winery where DBK's box-o-wine came from is only about 20 miles from here. I've had a crane in their winery numerous times...and during the crush season, the smell of alcohol is strong enough to give you a buzz...

I'm not a huge wine drinker by any means, but one thing I can tell you for sure is that you DO NOT have to spend a lot of money to get a good bottle of wine. I've had $10 bottles that taste just as good as some $50 bottles.

If I want to try something new I just go to a liquor store and look for highly rated wines. You can't really go wrong with a ~$10-$20 highly rated wine. If you don't like it, you only wasted $20
