Edit: I know that you guys are thinking about hangovers, but I'm talking about the effect of alcohol and being drunk/buzzed/tipsy. I know that having liquid in your system helps to prevent a hangover or to at least lessen the effect. However, to drink water right after alcohol I hear is bad. I usually wait a bit after I'm ready to sleep before drinking a mug of water.

Edit: I'm not talkign about like 20 shots or anything or heavy drinking. I'm asking this because my friend took about 5-6 shots and she threw up.. People wanted to give her water but someone else voiced this theory...
Whoever voiced that theory is a moron.

Definetely drink water.
Even after a night of a rather large consumption of alcohol, and then at least 3-4 cups of water before going to sleep, I only woke up with a slight loss of control of balance, no headache at all :)

The intoxicating effect of alcohol are controlled by the amount the brain is exposed to and the liver's of alcohol to aldehydes and ketones. Drinking water would lower the concentration of alcohol which means that the brain is exposed to less alcohol. The rate of the liver conversion of alcohol to aldehydes and ketones would not change.

I think you would feel less intoxicated if you drink water as you drink alcohol. Compare how you feel if you drink three shots of whiskey at the same time to drinking three beers.

Water dilutes the alcohol throughout your body and flushes it from your kidneys. Water is good for you, in the short term, and the long term.

Trust me, I am a doctor.

If I'm in for a long night of heavy drinking, then I'll drink one glass of water after every time I take a leak...

Dehydration sucks!

Ok, seeing as how I deal with this on an almost nightly basis, here is my advice.

Drink shittons of water BEFORE you go out and start drinking. Drink as much water/alcohol as you like while out having a grand old time. HOWEVER, once you vomit, you should stop drinking ANYTHING. The reason for this is because you have now offically poisoned your body, and vomiting up whatever is in your stomach is a common occurance. Drinking anything after vomiting will probably just cause you to vomit again, and at this point in the night, you probably just want to sleep...so we don't want to choke on our own vomit, now do we? This is why people say you shouldn't drink water after a heavy night of drinking...not because it is harmful, as small amounts of it generally aren't. But it is simply do the fact that choking on vomit from being too drunk actually DOES KILL PEOPLE. Just something to think about.

THe more you drink the faster you need to pee so you get it out of your system quicker.

C'mon, doesn't everyone know this? Sheesh!

When I drink, I get a glass of water for each glass of Crown & Coke I drink. That way, after way too many, I pee my brains out, but I sleep good and have zero hangover in the morning.

Of course, a night of drinking is always a good excuse to have an awesome breakfast of huge proportions, or something plain unhealthy like a Big Mac, large Fry and a DIET coke.

Water is definitely the way to go after a night of hard drinking. Alcohol thins your
bloodstream which causes the headaches and hangovers in the morning.

Dehydration is not the only factor in hangovers. Drinking lots of water will not always prevent a hangover. Just an FYI.

But it will make it tolerable at least...

Alcohol dehydrates the body, so drinking water after alcohol to replenish your body seems perfectly...logical.

It might prevent a headache, but dehydration has nothing to do with nausea, general malaise, or fatigue.
