Drinking alcohol while on antihistamines, specifically fexofenadine?

RichUK

Lifer
Been prescribed fexofenadine / antihistamines for some allergies I'm suffering from. I wasn't told by the doctor I couldn't drink alcohol (but then I didn't ask).

Just wondering if anyone also takes these antihistamines (same as allegra) and has drunk alcohol - did you have any adverse effect?

Thanks.

That sounds like a dare to me.

Realistically I avoid alcohol and prescriptions or even OTC drugs because I don't think it is really worth it. I imagine it amplifies the side effects of alcohol, though.

There's nothing in the packeage leaflet that comes with the pills suggesting not to take alcohol. Reading online suggests it could amplify side effects, but I've not suffered any side effects since taking them (every day, 3 weeks in).

The info online is flaky, but there appears to be a general feeling that it won't interact.

Plan on taking one in the morning, then go out for work meal and drinks about 12 hours later.

You'll be fine. I've been on claritin/allegra/that other one with the x or z for nearly 2 decades now, and it hasn't slowed down my drinking.

....I do get suddenly sneezy from time to time when drinking exceptionally hoppy beers, so maybe that is something? I have been thinking that I was developing allergies to hops or some bullshit like that.

Thanks for the response. I was thinking about taking a half dose (I'm on 120mg pills) and just having a few drinks.

Back in the 1980's a little snort of Peruvian flake would clear up even the most stubborn nasal congestion.

Not saying I tried it, not saying you should try it.

Just saying. (-:

Should be fine, but to be safe, call your local Boots and ask the Chemist, they will gladly answer any questions about it over the phone.

So yeah, had 3 pints of beer and certainly felt that it amplified the drunken effects. Felt more wobbly than anything, but nothing significant.

Though haven't drunk any alcohol in 2 months, which may have had something to do with it.
